Storyline
Did you know
- TriviaOne of the few episodes where Mannix doesn't subdue the bad guys before the cops arrive.
- GoofsWhen Mannix and Elena escape it is apparently supposed to be nighttime -- lights inside the house are visible, the porch light is on, the jeep's headlights are on, and the dialogue suggests it is night. But the scenery outside is very brightly lighted, too light for even full moonlight.
- Quotes
Joe Mannix: [wakes up in the middle of the night after drinking his spiked scotch with Elena sitting by his bed] You mind telling me what this is all about?
Elena: You want to get away from here, don't you?
Joe Mannix: Do you know a way?
Elena: Yes.
Joe Mannix: Well, what about you? Suppose they guess you're the one that turned me loose?
Elena: Harry will take care of me.
Joe Mannix: Harry who?
Elena: Harry Tass.
Joe Mannix: Harry Tass? Here?
Elena: You know him.
Joe Mannix: Yeah, I know him.
Elena: He wants you dead.
Joe Mannix: Yeah...
Elena: You'll have a good head start. They don't expect you to wake up until morning.
[starts unting Joe from the ropes he's bound to]
Joe Mannix: Hey, by the way, uh... thanks for that message. Otherwise, I might have finished that drink.
Elena: Shh!
[footsteps are heard retreating]
Joe Mannix: Are they all in the same business as Harry?
Elena: Yeah, it's a pool. You know, like a secretarial pool?
Joe Mannix: Only this is one for hit men. A place to cool off between jobs... draw weapons, get assignments. Is that why Harry's here, to get an assignment?
[Elena doesn't answer]
Joe Mannix: When? Where?
Elena: You better worry about yourself.
[frees Joe from the ropes that are tied around his wrist]
Joe Mannix: Who's Harry's target?
Elena: Drop it.
Joe Mannix: I know Harry Tass enough to know that he's only used for top jobs.
Elena: I said drop it.
Joe Mannix: Did he say anything? Give any hints?
Elena: Harry is my man. You're just passing traffic.
[frees Joe from the ropes tied around his feet]
Joe Mannix: Well... the man he's gonna kill must be somebody pretty important. Doesn't that mean anything to you?
Elena: No, not if it'll hurt Harry.
Joe Mannix: He's your man.
Elena: That's right. We can go now.
I totally agree with the last reviewer, detectives and vacations DO NOT mix. An excellent adventure. For one thing, it's based in the desert (Joe's home away from home) the perfect hideaway for a league of professional assassins. There's a lot of sprinting and hiding around a cool ranch house in the middle of absolutely nowhere, and beautiful Barbara Luna makes a super gun moll. A talented actress.
There's an old school scene that will give you a sentimental chuckle; Joe drinks from a glass and at the bottom is written "Help!" or something like that, in lipstick no less... If you're a movie buff, that comes from the old SHERLOCK HOLMES and CHARLIE CHAN movies.
Solid proof the writers took notes from the classic whodunits.
Look for Frank Langella, a few years before he reached stage and screen stardom as DRACULA. Later he played Nixon. TV's one and only deadpan John Hillerman is also aboard. Always a treat to watch what's up his sleeve. At the time of this episode, he appeared in Peter Bogdonovich's PAPER MOON, starring Ryan O'Neal, which brought him a lot of recognition.
The desert expanse photography is spot on, especially if you have lived in the desert. Watch for the choo choo train and the red caboose. There are no production notes, but this looks to have been filmed up near Barstow, California, on the way to Vegas where there are miles of emptiness.
Arnold Laven directed, who also produced the BIG VALLEY.
A MUST, especially for devout fans. Brings back a lot of Sunday night memories. LUCKY 7's. SEASON 7 EPISODE 7 remastered color CBS dvd box set. Same style as CANNON and BARNABY JONES.
