Goober is putting in max effort in signs and promotions to win his gas supplier's all-expenses-paid 10-day Hawaii vacation offer. Any dealer who increases their sales 200 percent for the month gets the reward. Sam feels Goober also wants to prove to everyone that he is just a good of a businessman as anyone. When Goober calculates that he has only improved 120 percent, he decides to stay open 24 hours a day. Goober next calculates that he has improved sales 212 percent and begins to pack for Hawaii. Millie decides to throw a going away party. However, the gas truck deliveryman Charlie (Judson Pratt) informs Goober that the contest hadn't even started yet. At the party, Goober can't bring himself to tell the others of the mistake he made. With gifts and ego, Goober decides to go off for 10 days and call/write back home pretending he is in Hawaii. The charade has comical complications.

Not too difficult to relate to !

Warning: Spoilers
While this episode may stretch credibility a bit,it isn't at all that difficult to imagine something like this happening in Mayberry. In ways big or small we've all been in at least somewhat similar situations to this. Rather than admit to an embarrassing mistake, our man Goober rides things out the hard way. The trouble is,everyone that Goober thinks he is fooling actually knows the real truth.. So the whole 'secret' charade that had to have cost him a fortune ends up being no secret to anybody. Now the new trouble is that Goober's friends (that he thinks he has fooled) are wondering exactly how to handle this as Goober exits the bus coming home from the 'airport',in a Hawaiian shirt and no tan! They want to save Goober's feelings and help him keep 'face',while knowing that it was all a sham of sorts. What will happen? Not bad, worth a few laughs/chuckles at least.

I remember this episode watching it as a kid and thinking how unusual it was. It's a loosely recycled version of Goober's Contest from the
"The Andy Griffith Show" Season 7, Episode 30. Just enough variations in it to make a decent episode.
Emmett Clark (Paul Hartman) was his usual comical throwing jabs at Goober. George Lindsey is the main focus throughout. He sheds the new brighter MRFD Goober back to a watered down TAGS version imbecile persona he was so funny portraying.
The hotel lodge desk clerk's (Louise Glenn) phone call and Goober subsequently on the phone was the funniest part. Louise Glenn was adorable in the role.
