Sam's love triangle
JordanThomasHall1 October 2019
Mayberry is holding its annual Harvest Ball and the town men are discussing their dates. Goober isn't revealing who he's planning to ask, however. Howard seems content talking with Emmett that he believes Goober will ask his ex-girlfriend Millie Swanson (Arlene Golonka, "Hang 'Em High")- as the two decided they'd never work long term. Millie runs Boysinger's Bakery in town where Sam pops in to ask permission to hang a sign promoting the ball and asks her to help sell tickets there. Sam begins to develop feelings for Millie and is disappointed to learn from Goober that she is the girl he plans to ask. He agrees to help Goober write a letter to her. Millie walks into city hall to give Sam, who has left, money from the tickets she's sold. She is elated to read from the typewriter a letter asking her to the ball. When it arrives in the mail she is disappointed to find it is from Goober. At the ball, Sam and Millie can't seem to keep their eyes off one another, however, leading to a dance between them. Goober observes their tenderness in what's become a love triangle and makes a formative decision.

A tender episode with heart, although little to no comedy.

Ending saved a stinker

Sam Jones (Ken Berry) doing the awkwardly shy bit didn't work well. It pretty much killed the whole episode. Things picked up with the dancing of Emmett (Paul Hartman), Goober (George Lindsey), and the lovely Millie (Arlene Galonka). When the couples got put right at least the episode was on more solid ground. A very dreadful viewing the first 3/4. Leave it to Beaver writers Mosher & Ross might of used a scrapped LITB script here dumped on MRFD it was so poorly written now used for adults. It was a real chore to get through until they got to the dance it was that bad. At least a good ending made it a little better.
