EAT THIS DIAMOND AND ENJOY IT!
tcchelsey3 September 2023
There were basically two kind of episodes at work on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. You either had the intense, complicated plot to overthrow some dictator ---OR-- you had a fun, outrageous plot to bring down some delusional kook. Here, look for the absolute outrageous, credit William Read Woodfield, who also did many stories for VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. He had imagination.

One of the most popular actors on tv at the time, John van Dreeland, plays ultra greedy Prime Minister Durvard. He has the good fortune to have a fabulous uncut diamond found in his small country, and will be paid handsomely for it. However, the damn fool wants more --- so the IMF team concocts a plan to introduce him to a "diamond machine" (could you believe it!) that will crank out copies of the priceless gem ... and of course relieve him of the original diamond. How to con a con. Beautifully done.

You have to admit, in real life, there probably would have been quite a few high ranking individuals skeptical of this sort of crazy plan, even if they were crazy themselves, but Woodfield took the chance and its quite entertaining, more of a dark comedy in this case. Without too much surprise, future MI episodes would have a "money machine" and other duplicating devices.

Van Dreeland may have been an old friend of Martin Landau, as they worked together on many tv shows, such as THE TWILIGHT ZONE. Before this episode, he had a great role opposite Lana Turner in MADAME X (1966), and worked for many years at Warner Brothers tv on shows like 77 SUNSET STRIP and SURFSIDE 6. Those were the days.

Also in the cast is the man for all seasons, Woodrow Parfrey (as Henks), best as nervous, neurotic types or con men, roles he played many times on MANNIX. We all loved this guy! He was also a WW II hero, during the famous Battle of the Bulge.

Watch for the "cat" sequence, which nearly throws a monkey wrench into the crew's master plan. Best of SEASON 1, EPISODE 19 restored CBS/Paramount dvd box set (2006).

Intricate plot involving diamonds
CCsito12 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After the rather lackluster three previous episodes of Season 1, this mission excels in the complexity of the mission and the inclusion of two extra helpers (a gem expert and a Scotland Yard official). The mission is to retrieve a large diamond that an evil corrupt person was going to use to buy his way to controlling parts of Africa. The IMF team concocts a plan to get the huge diamond by making it appear that they have invented the process of creating simulated diamonds. The plan includes having the gem expert create a close duplicate of a diamond and to installing the mechanical equipment that supposedly makes the duplicate diamonds. The entire team gets to participate in this mission. The most difficult part of the mission involved Barney getting a diamond from another person in an adjoining room by just going through an electrical outlet. The real kicker comes when a cat intrudes as he is extracting the diamond from the sleeping man.

Scratch one white supremacist dictator!
planktonrules6 February 2014
In this installment of "Mission: Impossible", the IM Force goes to Lumbuanda--an African nation that seems a lot like Rhodesia or South Africa. This is a country where the privileged whites rule and treat the black majority like dirt. Chief among these scum-bags is the Prime Minister, Henrik Durvard. Durvard doesn't care one bit about his people--just making himself rich. And, he's about to get a fortune for a huge diamond that was discovered in his country. So how is the team going to proceed? They're going to convince this greedy troll that they have created a machine that can make perfect copies of diamonds--and not the cheap industrial grade but diamonds big enough to choke a horse! Naturally the team plans on getting this diamond away from the guy but they have an extra special ending in store for him--the sort of ending that you'd never see in later episodes. This ending is what makes this such a good episode. I'd say more, but I don't want to spoil it.

I think what makes this one so good is that the audience truly despised this man and want to see horrible things happen to him. And, the show delivers big time! Well written and delightfully tough. Well worth seeing.
