Micky Dolenz of The Monkees
kevinolzak21 April 2014
The penultimate episode, "Barbara Lost" guest stars former Monkee Micky Dolenz as Chip's boyhood pal Brian Lipsker, who has since become the leader of a successful rock group under the name John Simpson. Charlie invites John over for dinner, serving him his favorite chili dogs, and asks how much he makes per year. 'Under two million' has Charlie wondering if he means 'dollars or trading stamps!' Now Chip has notions of giving up chemical engineering for the glamorous life of a rock star, playing his acoustic guitar around the house. After the dinner scene, we see Micky working the mixing board at the recording studio, listening to the group's performance and making corrections. Sadly, he doesn't perform any songs, so this Apr 6 1972 episode can't hold a candle to THE BRADY BUNCH's "Getting Davy Jones" (four months earlier, Dec 10 1971), which popularized the song "Girl," a failed single issued by Jones as the theme from Sandy Duncan's 1971 feature "Star Spangled Girl." At this early stage of his solo career, Dolenz only had one single, the Oct 1971 MGM Records release "Easy On You"/"Oh Someone," both arranged by fellow Monkee Peter Tork (none of his solo recordings became chart successes).
