See Sal
JordanThomasHall7 July 2020
The girls at Brooklyn Heights High are abuzz by the visit of famed alumnus Sal Mineo (himself). Patty is especially entranced by the young actor. He's there to film some establishing school shots and do research for a series he's to star in, but Patty feels it's really to discover talent- especially her talent. Patty is upset that Mr. Layton (Peter Collins) asked Cathy to show Sal around the school instead of her. Cathy arranges for Patty to take Sal to The Shake Shop and show him around. Sal is appreciative of the school and insists to his manager Colin Harvey (Mort Marshall) that he agrees to perform a show there. He asks Patty to try out to star opposite him in the show. Richard feels he must compete with Sal. Patty wows everyone with her dramatic performance at tryouts, but her performance on opening night may provoke a different reaction.

Warning: Spoilers
Who was Sal Mineo? Why did his career tank so quickly? For that matter, who was Patty Duke? A Parent Trap sitcom after becoming the youngest person to win the Oscar (later beat by one year by Tatum O'Neal, still standing) seems like an odd career choice, but Duke is still no slouch with her performance in The Miracle Worker. She presented Helen Keller as tough, intelligent then allowed Bancroft to take the spotlight.

It is because of this, Duke in the sitcom stands as an oddity, but later work, such as My Poor Charlie, shows Miracle Worker was no fluke.

So THEN to see her in an episode with Sal Mineo (best as I can guess, he was going for some Brando look, catch a young Burt Reynolds and he seems to be sporting the same attempt) with Mineo portraying himself and she is an adoring fan is remarkable to say the least.

Duke deservedly won her Oscar. Mineo had two noms to his name. Whatever equal footing they may have been meeting on, Duke is humbling in her fawning performance, then she freezes on stage.

One can only hope she had fun doing this show, as she was definitely slumming, but this episode seems to show she knew that she, Olivier, Julie Andrews and the future Streep, they all still had to use a restroom one time or another.
