The Aunt Who Came to Dinner
JordanThomasHall6 April 2020
Martin's wealthy Aunt Pauline (Ilka Chase, "Now, Voyager") is making her yearly rounds to the Lane household. Natalie and the kids bring up the outlandish gifts Aunt Pauline has given them over the years to display, as if their permanent decor. Expecting her only for dinner, she instead brings luggage and instantly begins turning things upside down. She takes Martin and Natalie's bedroom and insists on making dinner herself. She prepares for the family what they thought was announced as "beefsteak", but bite into an uninspiring "beet steak". When Aunt Pauline retires for the night, the family goes to the kitchen to eat, but she catches them and serves more beet steak. Aunt Pauline opens all the large windows in the house despite it being winter. While visiting Newfoundland, she learned from a doctor there that it is a good measure to prevent colds. The family is forced to sit bundled up and freezing to continue being good hosts. Through it, Cathy and Natalie bond. But, Aunt Pauline says hurtful things to Cathy who takes so much before lashing back out at her about how the family views her. It leads to friction and another heart-to-heart.
