Drake's Progress...
canndyman2 January 2021
When Cowley's former intelligence partner Drake is arrested, after he has been discovered sharing secrets with the Chinese, Cowley is also put under arrest by Bodie and Doyle for being implicated.

But, as ever, things aren't quite what they seem, and with the Russians also on the trail of Drake, a plan to spring him en route to his court hearing appears to be the key to finding out who the real double-agent is within CI5.

This is another one of those episodes that is quite heavy on talk and slow to get into any real action - but once it gets going, it rattles along to quite a satisfying conclusion.

Unusually, Cowley gets in among the action - and once more, gambles on Bodie and Doyle to do the business as he uses them as pawns in his unilateral games.

There's a fun scene early on with Bodie and Doyle dressed as uniformed coppers doing a bust at a Chinese gambling club - but where their opponents' martial arts are more than a match for their own!

The ambush of Drake while in a police convoy on a country road is well executed too, and the gas grenades create an effective literal smokescreen.

Not one of the very best episodes perhaps, but a good 'Cowley' story, with the old fox's motives keeping us guessing till the end.

Need to Know

Cowley tells the boys that the secret service never leaves you.

When Andy Drake an old colleague of Cowley is arrested for being a double agent for the Chinese. Bodie and Doyle have to tell Cowley that he is under house arrest.

Meanwhile the KGB plan to get hold of Drake to find out what he knows about the Chinese.

While Bodie and Doyle do all the running around even some kung fu fighting in a Chinese club. They are unaware that this is an elaborate plot by Cowley to unearth a mole in their own spy agencies. Drake is a bait for the KGB.

A nicely structured episode with Cowley committing a ruthless act on a bad guy that seems out of character. Cowley chides the boys for not handcuffing him but then is grateful that they did not. That is more in character.

There is still a horrendous racist element in this episode. When Bodie and Doyle are gassed, Cowley gives them oxygen. The Chinese man helping them is just left unconscious on the road.

Warning: Spoilers
NEED TO KNOW isn't a particular favourite of mine, dealing as it does with some Chinese spies who are handled in the usual politically incorrect way for the show. The nadir of the episode is a fight scene between the boys and a couple of karate-chopping goons who inevitably get the tables turned on them by our matchless heroes. Otherwise the plot is quite elaborate, but not in an interesting way; it's just something that seems to fill space rather than entertain.
