When Cowley's former intelligence partner Drake is arrested, after he has been discovered sharing secrets with the Chinese, Cowley is also put under arrest by Bodie and Doyle for being implicated.
But, as ever, things aren't quite what they seem, and with the Russians also on the trail of Drake, a plan to spring him en route to his court hearing appears to be the key to finding out who the real double-agent is within CI5.
This is another one of those episodes that is quite heavy on talk and slow to get into any real action - but once it gets going, it rattles along to quite a satisfying conclusion.
Unusually, Cowley gets in among the action - and once more, gambles on Bodie and Doyle to do the business as he uses them as pawns in his unilateral games.
There's a fun scene early on with Bodie and Doyle dressed as uniformed coppers doing a bust at a Chinese gambling club - but where their opponents' martial arts are more than a match for their own!
The ambush of Drake while in a police convoy on a country road is well executed too, and the gas grenades create an effective literal smokescreen.
Not one of the very best episodes perhaps, but a good 'Cowley' story, with the old fox's motives keeping us guessing till the end.
