STAGE 7 – To Kill a Man – 1955

This is the 6th episode of the one season run of the anthology series, STAGE 7. The series ran for 25 episodes during 1955. The headliner in this film noir like episode is, Alexis Smith.

Alexis Smith is married to a wealthy businessman, Scott Forbes. It seems to be a great life with cash, a fancy home, clothes, servants, membership in all the right clubs.

Her friends though think she is a brave one. It seems that hubby Forbes tips a few and stays out till all hours having a good time. When he does show it always leads to a fight between Smith and Forbes. At least that is the impression Smith is always giving.

This less than happy series of events is all a sham by Smith. She is simply making sure that when she goes for a divorce, there are plenty of witnesses to Forbes behaviour.

One evening a down on his luck drifter, John Goddard, breaks into the house to rob it. Miss Smith catches Goddard. But instead of calling for help, Smith hands him her rings and a wad of cash from her purse. She even offers him a job with the family business.

Goddard is amazed by Smith's kindness and says he will pay back everything. That is till Smith grabs the pistol after Goddard sets it down. Smith gets a rather nasty look in her eyes as she taunts the man about killing him.

Hubby, Forbes, now appears and takes in the whole scene. Goddard makes a break for the outside and Smith start shooting, just missing the man. Forbes steps up and takes the gun from Smith. He tells Goddard to beat the feet while he deals with Smith. He now has something on Smith. The divorce is not going to be the cash cow Smith was hoping for.

The episode is based on a short story by the famous American writer, Jack London. While it does supply the odd bit of tension, it must of, lost some bite when transferred to the screen. All in all, it makes a rainy day time waster, but nothing more.

It is of course always interesting to see the curvy Alexis Smith in anything. A real first class looker is Miss Smith. (B/W)
