Fort Wyatt Crossing

Luke and two passengers Maria Lorenz and salesman Mr Brewster find a young wounded cavalry soldier. He had been fleeing from some Indians and has a gunshot wound.

Luke treats the soldier, Brewster finds four boxes of gold coins in the army wagon worth nearly two hundred thousand dollars. Luke now knows why the trooper was shot but why was he on his own.

Later a small group of soldiers arrive looking for the trooper. However the outcasts known as digger Indians are always nearby.

A decent enough story. The outcast Indians who are unwanted were unnerving. The basic story was well worn. I think Luke should had realised much earlier that the other group of soldiers were in cahoots with the wounded trooper.

Those Indians were creepy.

In this episode, Luke is taking a whiskey drummer and a beautiful woman named Maria on the stagecoach to New Mexico territory. Along the trail they come up to a wounded Cavalry officer laying next to a wagon that has ran off the road. The officer had been shot and needed attention and the load he was carrying, that was still next to the crash site, was boxes of gold.

Watching all this unfold, are a group of Indians that are known as diggers. It seems that the diggers are Indians that have been thrown out of their tribe for reasons and now live an existence in the hills of the desert.

Luke is going to take the wounded officer to Fort Wyatt which is a few days ride from their location. But as the officer heals, he tries to steal the stagecoach with the loaded gold and leave the others in the desert to face the diggers.

By chance a small unit of Cavalry officers are riding by and Luke is set on turning over the renegade officer to the approaching Captain. However, the small unit does not turn out to be the men Luke was hoping to see.

The story had some interesting situations but for some reason the action never seemed fresh or remarkable. It was basically the story about people stealing the payroll and the only thing different was the fact that they worn cavalry uniforms. Steven Terrell, who look handsome on the screen, did a nice job of playing his part but getting the same wound twice in one episode seemed an over-use. There was some creepy Indians and Luke did get some kissing time, but otherwise seemed average for a western.
