Good as it gets.

The first episode of season three is color! They did a first rate job of blending color footage of B-17's; much of it is new footage instead of the stock take off and landings we can become so familiar with. This story gives us combat, drama, melo-drama, taunt characterizations across the board. I'm developing an admiration for Paul Burke's work heretofore over shadowed by Robt Lansing's General Savage. The director gets top quality performances from everyone and Paul Burke gives, in my opinion, his finest portrayal of Col. Gallager. He must obey orders and convey those orders to his strung out crews. He's being hamstrung by secrectcy and crucified by air crews coming apart at the seams. Even the ground crews' problems are illustrated not just alluded to. This is one of the tightest character-driven episodes of the series. All I will say more is, I give this show two thumbs way up. You watch and see for yourself. Every word of dialog is strategic. Don't leave the room till the closing credits have run, Roberta In Reno. I get up at 3:50 am to watch this show.

D-Day is finally upon us.

The 918th is in bad shape. The unit has been on mission after mission and they are exhausted and the unit strength is minimal. So, not surprisingly, they are told to stand down for 10 days so they can recuperate and rest. However, almost as soon as the order is given, the General orders them back into action. Why? Well, no one in the 918th knows it but the invasion of France is about to occur and they need the bombers for various missions in preparation for this.

This is a very good episode...one that is both important historically AND is the first color episode. In fact, unlike seasons 1 and 2, 3 is all color and so far it looks pretty good. Well worth seeing and one that shows the rigors of war and its effects on the men.

12 O'Clock High in colour!

The 918th Bomb Group is flying several missions a day to heavily defended targets on the coast of France. Losses are severe and the men are at breaking point. Colonel Gallagher, under massive strain himself, has been promised a promotion but first the campaign must be completed.

The first episode of 12 O'Clock High in colour and it's a great one. Not just because of the colour but because the plot is so gritty and shows the extreme lengths military personnel must go to and the sacrifices that need to be made in wartime. There's also an air of secrecy about the mission they're on, demonstrating how, despite putting everything on the line, most of the time they don't even know why they're doing it.

Round off an excellent episode, we have the background of a major historic event in WW2. Quite the episode.
