Feuding Dance Hall Proprietors
bkoganbing11 February 2014
This episode might have rated higher from me had it not been done for The Untouchables. But certainly the mission of the Treasury Department agents could have nothing to do with a pair of feuding dance hall operators.

The two feuding are Theo Marcuse and Ed Nelson. Marcuse has the much larger operation. A sniper has shot two dance hall girls from Nelson's studio and Nelson thinks it's Marcuse behind it. He shoots and kills Marcuse and now has a big syndicate player in Joe DeSantis after him.

Not for a million years does Nelson suspect that it's his younger brother Sherwood Price recently come from New York doing these killings. Price is someone with some real issues over women which makes him the killer he is. Again not something that is in the jurisdiction of the Treasury agents.

In this next to last Untouchables story, Robert Stack has to go east to do research on the brothers and Paul Picerni runs The Untouchables for a while. Something that I'm sure was a gesture to Picerni from Stack and the producers at Desilu.

Too bad it wasn't a better show.

Since the series is almost over, I guess that's why they accepted such a weak script.

When the episode begins, one of Marty Pulaski's dancehall girls is killed by a sniper. Not surprisingly, he assumes his rival (who owns MOST of the clubs in town) is behind it. Vince Bogan swears he's not responsible but Marty doesn't believe him...and kills him! The big boss is upset but willing to overlook Marty's indiscretion...until MORE girls start getting shot and it's now obvious Bogan had nothing to do with any of this! The real answer is much closer to Marty than he ever expected!

The other reviewer is 100% correct...a guy who kills dancehall girls is NOT the sort of thing a Treasury agent would or even legally could investigate. Their domain would be drugs, alcohol and counterfeiting and not much else...and "The Untouchables" so often has nothing to do with any of these. This is a major weakness of the episode...though this is also the problem with several other episodes...this certainly is NOT the only one.

So if you ignore reality and simply look at this as entertainment, is it any good? Well, if you ever were dying to see Paul Picerni (the guy who plays Ness' right hand man) do a bit more in an episode, you are in for a treat. What isn't a treat is watching SOME of Sherwood Price's characterization as he plays Herbie, Marty's brother. He is supposed to be deranged...but seems to play this all way too broadly and obviously! Subtle, he ain't! And, way off the deep end weird, too! The episode seems to have little to do with the series and comes off as a bit too goofy...almost cringe- worthy goofy! Not among the better shows in the series, that's for sure.
