Fastest gun doesn't win
tonycollums9 May 2022
This is one of the best episodes ever of The Virginian. A young stranger with a fast gun saves the Virginian, saves thousands of dollars for Shiloh Ranch. But there's something dark driving the stranger. He doesn't fit in at Shiloh, he's not liked at Shiloh, but he stays. Old wounds come to the surface and the story unfolds. Very good episode.

Long standing family grudge
bkoganbing25 March 2020
This Virginian story has young Robert Lipton saving James Drury's life and the Shiloh ranch sale proceeds from three outlaws. That earns him a job at Shiloh.

Lipton is a fast draw with a nasty temper and doesn't get along with the other hands. He's also got history with John MccIntire though it dates back to when he was an infant and contains misinformation.

Tim McIntire guests in this episode playing one of the few real historical western characters John Wesley Hardin. As Hardin he has one scene with Lipton and he performs a very specific plot function,.

Nice performances by Lipton and Tim McIntire.

One Of The Weaker Espiodes In The First 8 Seasons
bcrd5002 September 2021
It seems that the weaker episodes of the first 8 seasons always centered around John McIntire. Except for Stewart Grainger, McIntire was the worst owner of the series for several reasons. One, during his entire film career, he was a secondary co-star who never carried the film or TV show and that includes his years with Wagon Train.

This episode wants you to believe a 60 year old Grainger would attempt to fight first class gun fighter half his age.

Another problem with the episode is the name dropping of Doc Holiday, The Youngers, and John Wesley Hardin, who for different reasons could not have been in Medicine Bow, Wyoming in 1888-90 or for matter entire 1880s.

The final problem is Drury and McClure are bookends in the episode.
