First Draw - Spoof Which Led To Western Bond
DKosty12316 April 2009
This pilot has a solid guest cast with Suzanne Pleschette & Victor Buono. According to legend there are 2 different versions of this pilot show around. I have seen only one even though I have a VHS version & the Season 1 DVD version, they seem to be the same.

The plot involves an 1870's scenario where the Southwestern United States is in danger of leaving the United States because of a band of revolutionaries led by a seeming Mexican leader. It introduces a large Chinese man & Pleschette's character in a mansion with an arsenal in the basement. This theme is used in other episodes of the series including at least one Dr. Lovelass episode.

James Gregory appears as President Grant and gives West the train to travel for his mission. The train is there for the rest of the series as home base for some great shows over the next 4 seasons.Arte shows up in disguise early on before we find out he is West's partner. "How about them boots, you won't be needing them," makes its first time use in this show. The same line is used in at least one or more later episodes.

The gadgets are introduced early on in this episode, and West's armory on the train is quite impressive as well. There are some crude sequences but overall this show is a good start. Victor Buonos multiple roles are very impressive to support the start of what would turn into a very good series.

Go west, young Jim!
Sthom-2225 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Directed by Richard C. Serafian, Gilbert Ralston's 'Night Of The Inferno' gets 'The Wild Wild West' series off to a flying start. It begins with a train bringing to Washington an important new prisoner - 'Captain James T. West' ( Robert Conrad ) - who is due to be hanged for desertion. In fact, he is on his way to a secret meeting with 'President Ulysses S. Grant' ( James Gregory ). He claims the country is in a whole 'pot of trouble'. Would-be revolutionary 'Juan Manolo' is at large, so Jim - given a cover as a rich playboy with his very own train, the Wanderer, and a partner in the form of that master of disguise, 'Artemus Gordon' ( Ross Martin ) sets off for the town of Quemada where Manolo's men recently carried out a raid. The trail leads them first to portly Chinaman 'Wing Fat' ( Victor Buono, a few months away from his famous role as 'King Tut' on 'Batman' ) and sassy gambling den owner 'Lydia Monteran' ( Suzanne Pleshette ), with whom Jim once had a fling.

Like I said, a good start, although, fairly straight by comparison with some of the later episodes, particularly those featuring 'Dr.Migelito Loveless' ( Michael Dunn ). Originally, the episode was to have opened with narration dedicating the episode to that 'unsung American hero, Jim West'. The gadgets and fights are thrilling ( Conrad did a lot of his own stunt work ). Arte is first seen disguised as a scruffy man who watches Jim arrive by train. He and Jim are already acquainted. When they first meet, Lydia begins shooting at Jim. In the script, they threw food and water over each other. The idea of an American secret agent answerable only to the President was originally going to be done in 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' but got dropped. Grant featured in other episodes, but this is the only one where James Gregory played him. The following year, he became Matt Helm's boss 'MacDonald' in Phil Karlson's spy spoof 'The Silencers'.

I don't exactly know why the Wild Wild West was aired on Brazil straight on the second season, maybe to be in color or something, the for the first time l saw the pilot episode and how Jim West was tasked by President Grant himself, he got his own train and his fellow Artemus Gordon, their first assignment will be at Quemada a city on southwest area, where have rumors of an upcoming uprising by Mexicans, his leader is Juan Manolo, there Jim meets who? Yeap the malicious fat Chinese (Victor Buono) he avoid to give the hideout of Manolo, therefore he recommends that he looking for a gorgeous girl Lydia (Suzanne Pleshette) who shall know his whereabout, actually Lydia was a mate of Jim in near past, she refuses gives any clue, the remains to Jim make a proper inquiry, end up find out a man who introduce himself as Manolo (Nehemiah Persoff) however it wasn't the whole story, an unexpected surprises is coming, fabulous opening episode!!

History is repeating itself..,
eman_groove10 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's amazing how these kind of series produced in the late 50's and early 60's predict events that are currently happening or unfolding today. This episode refers to insurrection and over throwing a government or leader bent on destroying democracy. Uncle Sam is sparing no expense to thwart that proposal. The President enlist a special agent to be undercover to ensure the task will be successful and save the free world. Although the time and settings are the Wild West, those storylines apply today.

Who knew Susan Plesshett would be Bob Newhart's tv wife years later. She proved she could portray a wide range of characters that gave way to being a television personality on a hit tv sitcom.

Robert Conrad & Ross Martin could have been the" I Spy" of the Wild Wild West. Love it.
