"Arthur, we need brains like yours in Washington. On second thought, we already have brains like yours in Washington."

Warning: Spoilers
Great line showing the differences between Arthur and Maude, one of many in the series. This has another great moment when Philip questions why he is the only one in the family that goes to church, leading to Maude and Walter hemming and hawing until Maude exposes the fact that their hypocrites which makes Philip confuse because he thought they were Presbyterian. The episode surrounds mods decision to buy a house for Chris and Carol across the street, Fred Grandy's third episode in the second season. Carol's upset because she didn't have a say in the house or the location, and Maude seems assured that they'll love it.

This is one of the first real serious issues between Maude and Carol cool have had their share of life disagreements, but nothing as conflicting as this. We've never had the indication from Carol that she doesn't want to be like her mother or have her constantly interfering but this really brings out feelings she's kept well hidden.

When Carol says "I don't want to be known as Maude Jr.", it's like a knife to her mother's heart, and both Bea Arthur and Adrienne Barbeau are excellent with Bill Macy great support and Grandy a terrific recurring guest. The writing is scary because it is so true to life with mother and daughter relationships seemingly perfect but showing how hidden feelings can often erupt in times of crisis. By Maude declaring "Children, children!" to them, you get to see what Bea later went through with Sophia on "Golden Girls". The way this shows off hypocrisy of characters now beloved makes this a classic.

Maude's Surprise For Carol And Chris
Jimmy_the_Gent410 August 2019
Maude tells engaged couple Carol and Chris that she put a down payment on a house for them.

An amusing episode, no big laughs. It begins with some funny bits about Walter's snoring and Phillip wants to know why he has to go to church but Maude and Walter do not. She says because they are hypocrites. Maude tells Carol and Chris the house she picked out is right across the street. They tell her they want to live their own lives. Maude attempts a to put a guilt trip on Carol.
