A work of Edgar Allan Poe
nfrobinson14 April 2007
I am unaware of any Sherlock Holmes story with a title including the "Purloined Letter." Certainly, nothing of the sort was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Interestingly, this work had much to do with Doyle's inspiration for Holmes. "The Purloined Letter" was written by Edgar Allan Poe, who among other accolades, was plainly the father of the modern detective story. The hero in Poe's detective works, like this one, was Auguste Dupin. His character was never developed like Holmes. Detective fiction was not Poe's primary interest, but it remains one of his time-tried and panic-tested successes as a pioneer in literature.

"The Purloined Letter" is an excellent story which is well-studied, and presented a few times as a radio drama. To my knowledge, it has never made it to the silver screen, but I'm not a movie expert. If someone made a movie of this non-copyrighted work, it would be of historical significance and potentially a masterpiece. It could easily include a measure of humor.

Hope this helps. Thanks for providing such a great resource.
