Life in the future was sure hectic. Having to press buttons to get what you want done for you. Jane's fingers are about ready to fall off her hands. What's more, she has to get the kids ready for school. Elroy's going on a field trip to Siberia and Judy wants to go swimming in Hawaii. Now to get George awake. He's flipped out of bed and gets mechanical tooth brushes shoved in his mouth. Breakfast turns into a real blowout...literally. The food-a-rac-a-cycle blows up. Jane says they need a new one, but George states they can't afford it. Why not ask for a raise at work? So while George gathers up the courage to do so, Jane whines about having to push buttons to start her housework machines, then gets a call from her mother who suggests they get a robot maid. Sure enough there was a place that offered a 1-day free trial run, so Jane jumps right on top of it. You know, even though she's a sweetheart, Jane is lazy and a real, bona fide complainer. She has machines that do all her work and she complains about having to turn them on. Literally, a machine that does everything for her. Everything but go to the bathroom for her, I'm sure, but you never know...anyway, Jane seeks the robot maid agency and is shown two stereotypical European models, and one spunky old clunker, Rosie. Jane accepts the latter, so after sticking her metal tongue out at the proprietor, Rosie goes to her new home; at Spacely Sprockets, Mr. Spacely is forced to eat out again because his wife has a social gathering. Desperate for a home-cooked meal, he invites himself to George's home that night.
Well, Rosie becomes a big hit with the kids. She's an expert at football, basketball, and can even do your homework for you. But boy does George get a surprise when he comes home and sees their new maid. But lightens up when he hears she's free for one day. Spacely drops by, meets the family, and they all eat a dish secretly prepared by Rosie: Cream of Leftovers. However it isn't long before Spacely discovers Rosie and berates George. Well after Rosie serves dessert, pineapple upside down cake, right on Spacely's head, George is fired. That didn't matter too much since the family loved seeing Spacely having his cake and eating it too...literally. He gets to thinking and realizes he rather likes Rosie, so he accommodates George so he can keep her, and so all is well. Rosie is now a member of the family the Jetsons' lives are made a modicum easier.
Rosie will appear once more in "Rosie's Boyfriend" and then will not be seen again until the 1985 reboot. I'm still not sure why her appearances here were so limited. I guess they didn't want her taking away the focus of the show? Anyway, this episode is a good starter for a great series. We meet George Jetson, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy, and Jane his wife. Great song lyrics too. Just tells you who the characters are, and then they show you what the show is about, rather than sing about it. Though not as successful as The Flintstones, The Jetsons was one for the ages, and continues to be so. So check out Rosie and all the others in these classic episodes.
