Warning: Spoilers
"Avalanche" is one of those episodes I can watch time and again. The Mysterons threat is against a missile system based in the snowy wastes of North America. It's boss is General Ward, a man who Colonel White feels is "trigger happy", slow to learn and an ingrate to boot. Ward is almost eager to launch his missiles: "Target...Mars!" so Spectrum must stop The Mysterons otherwise the war between them and the Earth will just get worse.

One of Ward's bases goes off-line, no communications. Colonel White sends Captain Scarlet & Lieutenant Green ("I'm glad the Colonel gave me this chance to see some action.") to investigate. They find all the base staff are dead, with no signs of injury. There's a spooky mist right up to waist height. Their detectors show no signs of poisonous gas and the mist checks out as water vapour. It's only when Lt Green removes his respirator that they discover that all of the oxygen in the air has been removed. This is reported to Colonel White. He tells them that the wreck of a maintenance truck has been spotted yet the same truck visited the base.

Scarlet and Green race their SPV to the next base down the line because General Ward is ready to launch his missiles. Lt Green discovers the device being used to remove the oxygen whilst Capt Scarlet races after the truck. The Mysteron reconstruction spots the SPV and so he releases liquid oxygen and Scarlet crashes the SPV. With no chance of catching the truck before it crashes into the Frost Line HQ, blowing it to pieces, Scarlet uses his side arm to start an avalanche and the truck is destroyed.

Back on Cloudbase, General Ward radio's Colonel White, convinced that it was his threat to launch his missiles that scared The Mysterons off! Naturally, Colonel White is miffed at the guy taking credit for Spectrum's efforts.

It's great that Lt Green got some action, and just like his "Do I get a coconut?" in the episode "Crater 101" he's funny here when he knocks out the sentry with a karate chop and says "Sorry buddy, but it just had to be done." I wonder if this episode, which saw Capt Blue sitting in for Lt Green was made this way as Ed Bishop wasn't free but Cy Grant was?

9/10.
