Jamesie offers to take Ella away to visit the renowned flowers fields of Amsterdam for a long weekend. He also suggests that Rab and Mary go with them. It is not the magnanimous gesture it seems though. Jamesie in reality is only there to visit the red light area. Not that Ella is any better. She is secretly scoping out the pimps of Amsterdam.
Meanwhile. Mary feels that Rab is losing interest in her and so decides to take steps to get the romance back into their marriage...
A nice episode with some wonderful location shooting in Amsterdam. Rab's disgust at Jamesie's sordid behaviour is indeed palpable, especially when it comes between his and Mary's weekend. 'Bulbs' also boasts some great lines, particularly when Rab remembers the first time he walked romantically along a canal with Mary. ''The last time we went for a romantic stroll together I ended up down on one knee!'' Mary smiles nostalgically, until Rab adds ''And you ended up down on both knees!''.
Jonathan Watson, marking his fifth 'Nesbitt' appearance, appears briefly as a Dutch waiter.
