Mr. Over-confidence

For a guy who normally would have few options romantically, Barney puffs up like he's going to explode. Thelma Lou is a pretty woman. She has put up with so much from this guy and he continually takes advantage of it. Here are the first signs that the bricks are crumbling. He keeps shooting his mouth off so he can show off to his friends.

Barney's Fall & Rebound
AudioFileZ10 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This time Barney's inflated opinion of himself gets a "gut-check"...you know where it hurts...as in "love hurts".

Kind of a set-up for a "just up-commance" Barney isn't exactly moving mountains to help Thema Lou get to a Mt. Pilot appointment. So Barney "allows" Gomer to take Thelma Lou to Mt. Pilot. Thelma Lou in passing conversation learns that Barney say's he has her "in his hip pocket". Not the same as saying one's paramour is" the wind beneath my wings" exactly, Thelma Lou is hurt and strikes back.

There's a great Gomer line where he tells Thelma Lou she feels about him the way he feels about him. And for all of Barney's worry he's right back like we love him by episode's end. The beginning dialogue between Barney and Thelma Lou is quite unusual for the show and is also worth watching. Not an episode particularly funny, but a good dive into some of the core of each character. I appreciate it for the change of pace.

Thelma Lou too pretty for Barney makes it funny.

Episode raises a lot of questions. Barney in no prize, but is dating beautiful Thelma Lou. Always was puzzling, but it makes it funny. Also it keeps Barney's ego inflated, which is integral for the shows humor.

Barney is made to be be Don Juan. He puts off marriage, as it's implied he has many more options. Though in Barney's return meeting with Thelma Lou after moving out of Mayberry it's obvious his handling, then subsequent dumping of Thelma Lou was a horrible life choice. But, Barney is complex. Poor decisions are not uncommon to him.

Actual California Spanish style homes backdrop scenery, or just somebody put up wrong drawings looking out of the courthouse window when Gomer first suggests to driving Thelma Lou to the dentist.

Epilogue is a little flat. Redo of the hip pocket line.

Warning: Spoilers
It's not a bad episode overall . It's not without humor or lacking in a decent plot. The problem is by now Barney's attitude towards certain things and in particular Thelma Lou is wearing thin . He's still turning in some of the best and funniest performances but other times he beats everything as Andy would say.

Andy even calls Barney on his double standard with Juanita when Thelma Lou steps out with Gomer mostly to get back at Barney for taking her for granted and bragging about it . Barney's response? That's different! Andy probably though doesn't help Thelma Lou in this one as he deliberately or not so deliberately gives Gomer the idea of how to get Barney and Thelma Lou together again.

In the end I am glad Thelma Lou married someone else. That they finally put Thelma Lou and Barney together decades later seems less like correcting something they could have just let it stand.

BARNEY THE BLOW HARD!

I am so tired of Barney's double standard! What makes him think it is perfectly ok for him to date Juanita behind Thelma Lou's back, but Thelma Lou better not pull that on him? He finally gets what he deserves when in a later episode Barney discovers she married some other guy.
