THE BLUE LOTUS is another two-part adventure for Tintin, supported by Snowy and the Thompson Twins in a small cameo. This one sees Tintin travelling further east than normal, when his visit with some old buddies in India is cut short by a plea for help from China. Tintin goes to visit a distinguished Japanese gentleman but his trip is interrupted by repeated attempts on his life.
Any fan of Tintin will know well what to expect from this story: lots of globe-trotting, action, and near-death experiences. The tale is told so quickly that it barely catches breath and it's very easy to get caught up in the exotic professionalism of the piece. THE BLUE LOTUS has a vicious edge in places and I was surprised to see the extraordinarily racist depiction of the Japanese guy; funny how the Congo and Soviet stories weren't filmed due to racism concerns but it's fine to be racist to Asians.
