"A Fountain Pen and a Harebrained Notion"
wes-connors20 November 2011
In spite of the coroner's decision, not everyone in Collinsport is satisfied Bill Malloy died accidentally. Coming from behind the opening production slate, David (David Henesy) announces his father is the murderer. Avoiding math lessons from some very peculiar arithmetic books, it's no wonder David thinks 8 x 8 = 65. David tells Vicki (Alexandra Moltke) his crystal ball identified Malloy's killer. David notices the silver fountain pen in Vicki's possession. He thinks it's cool. Before the end of the episode, half the cast will deduce the pen is very important evidence...

Roger again offers Vicki a job with friends in Florida, adding a few thousand dollars to the deal...

At the hotel restaurant, Burke (Mitchell Ryan) grills Patterson, but the sheriff is not impressed with Burke's idea that Malloy's killer lost a fountain pen on the beach at "Lookout Point". Patterson searched the area, but only found empty beer cans. He wants to read his detective novel and drink coffee served by silent Susie (Carol Crist). Burke decides to call Roger and invite him to town for a confrontation. Burke tells Roger he's at the Blue Whale, but he's not; he's at the "Collins Port Inn". Roger gets there in nine minutes and 20 seconds. At Collinwood, a theft occurs...

Roger's got to think...Where's the ink?

Warning: Spoilers
"A pen! A pen! My kingdom for a pen!"

I'm surprised that Louis Edmunds didn't ad-lib that line in an episode that surrounds the location of the pen Roger stole from Burke and later lost. Roger seems to have temporarily forgotten about his feud with Burke momentarily in order to meet him for a polite conversation in regards to what happened to the pen Burke gave Vicki that Roger later stole. Conversations between Vicki and David about the pen lead to more conversations between Roger and Vicki about it, and back again to David and Vicki. The only thing of consequence that happens is Roger sneaking into David's room. A rather dull and uneventful episode that you hope leads to something down the road, but it lacks in the humor that had been subtly dropped in other episodes.

'Pen gate' commences...
Leofwine_draca6 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 82 follows on from Malloy's murder, just like the previous ten episodes, with the twist that the show now seems to be setting up a new 'pen gate' following on from the previous 'valve gate'. Roger's guilt seems to hinge on the clue of a missing fountain pen, and Burke has sniffed out the mystery. Watch it develop from here...
