Episode 89 takes a break from the current Victoria-centred storyline to find out what Burke's been up to. It turns out that industrial espionage is the order of the day, with lots of shady business shenanigans and threat aimed at the Collins business empire.

After a week's worth of episodes surrounding a pen and the key to a locked wing, the show goes back to the Collins canning factory for one not so brief shining moment, a boring episode where Burke Devlin speaks to employees about coming to work for him so he can close down the cannery and achieve his dreams of destroying the Collins family. It is a jarring change from the story of Victoria being locked in the closed wing and the appearance of a ghostly image of the recent past. Had this been a part of a traditional serial, it might stand out among the romantic intrigue as something a bit better, but with "Dark Shadows", those types of storylines were minor in relation to the intrigue and mystery. Of course, the writers had to attack this issue at some point. They just chose the wrong time to do so.
