Tough Woman, Hard Life, Awesome wave
rosestoddart1 March 2010
I had to write this review as I completely disagree with the previous review. I just watched 20 latest release surf movies for a festival I am running and only 3 stick in my mind, this was one of them. She is not your average blond tanned privileged beach bunny. And what she managed was incredible. And where she came from was gut wrenching. Im not really sure what the previous reviewer was doing - surfing is inherently a selfish sport; and belongs to mavericks, it is rarely a team event. Witness what happens when someone hurts themselves in Indo - some line up to help get the hapless victim on a plane; giving up their own journey and others go quiet and hide in their huts until the hurt one is carted off. This movie shows the hurt this woman suffered; and the love and achievement she managed despite it. Plus I am virulently anti Christian (cant help it) and a scientist too - and this woman is a Christian and a scientist; so I admire her. Please don't listen to the last reviewer. If you admire tenacity; devotion and success through trial after trial; watch this.

The ocean waves are moving. This one-act is not.

I have to disagree with the other reviewer. I got all the hype about a surfer overcoming the wave, a woman overcoming her social constraints, or perhaps a short film overcoming it's indie limitations. Unfortunately, this self-absorbed drivel like so many indie films, is more about nameless "artistic" filmmakers indulging in touting their personal interests to an irrelevant audience. What social bearing does someone's infatuation with surfing have for the rest of us? What significance does this film have in today's world of financial disaster? Only that not all of us can afford to spend our time peddling around on a surfboard. Or, for that matter, make a pointless movie about it.

The whole film just came across as self-absorbed and congratulatory. Yes, the first woman to ride such and such wave may have some historical significance - for example, in the Guinness Book of World Records. There were no exciting moments in this film, no instances of danger for example, where the audience must anticipate this woman's success.

Bottom Line: WHO CARES?!?

Warning: Spoilers
i happened upon this movie at the local library in half moon bay, California which just happens to be the location of maverick's. it was an inspirational experience in hope, faith, and accomplishment. it encourages one to go ahead and "ride" the most challenging of waves that one may face in life. it felt like a reflection of my own life except for the fact that i got stuck somewhere on the crest of the wave. i have begun to even more appreciate a lone person's struggles under a sometimes hostile and fragile environment to accomplish their dreams...she is a scientist as well. her spiritual beliefs guided her on her path through life.
