Did He Survive?
AaronCapenBanner25 September 2014
Intriguing episode speculates that western outlaw Butch Cassidy(made famous by Paul Newman in the 1969 film "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid") did not die in Bolivia with his partner Sundance, but instead somehow survived, and traveled back to his western home in America to live a quiet life, finally dying in 1937. Interviews are conducted with family and friends, who are convinced of Butch's identity, and the accounts are quite interesting, and a colorful bunch of eccentric characters people this episode, which nicely evokes its time and place most authentically. Viewers of course will decide for themselves what to believe or not.

Make one wonder.

Warning: Spoilers
Butch Cassidy is an episode which make one wonder! Did Butch survive or did Butch die in South America. The Butch Cassidy episode went over Butch's life. Explains the theory of Butch's death in South America. The other theory that Butch moved back to Washington State and living to an old age is the second theory. Supposed family member, towns folk talk about accounts of of Butch's deception and getting away from the law. In Search of leans towards Butch getting away. Like all legends people want more than what's real. I have no opinion. But I wonder after watching! 7 out of 10 stars. Worth watching. One of the strongest episodes of season 2.

In Search Of... "Butch Cassidy" (1978)

The legend of Butch Cassidy turns out to be one of the best episodes in the series as we learn about how he was supposed to have been killed in Boliva but we hear from several eyewitnesses who said he was in America decades after this. These eyewitnesses talk about seeing him in his hometown and many claim to have spoken with him. We also hear from a woman who said Butch lived until 1937 and that she knows where he's buried. I was really surprised at how great this episode was because it did a really good job at talking about what make Butch a legend among the people who knew him and why many experts believe that he didn't die in that famous shootout.
