Shark Culture
AaronCapenBanner24 September 2014
Surprisingly compelling episode details how a primitive tribe in the Pacific both fears and worships sharks, and how this belief is ingrained in their culture and behavior. Real footage of their cultural practices in how they interact with the sharks in the water, and if necessary make sacrifices to them in order to appease their life spirit is most interesting, if strange to western eyes, who mostly look at sharks as the subjects of horror films or something to be hunted for trophies. Poignant in that this culture was gradually dying off, as the influence of western society was erasing this once cherished heritage. Judgment is of course left up to the viewer.

One of the better episodes!

Warning: Spoilers
One of the better episodes! In Search of The Shark Worshippers is both educational, and entertaining. In Search of explains the dangers, behaviour, and physical traits of sharks. Great live footage, of sharks and the dangerous results of sharks. Then the explanation of the Shark Worshippers, the environment and life of the tribe. No longer human sacrifices are part of the worship, but worship is still from the old. The people live in village is portrayed at time forgot back for the 1970's by In Search of. The village has it ways and culture. The Shark Worshippers ways of life is idea for the people there was the impression from In Search of. Worth checking out. 7 out of 10.

In Search Of... "Shark Worshipers" (1978)

This here is without question one of the best episodes that the series had to offer up to this point. It starts off as a documentary on sharks and we're basically taught that we should fear their attack. This here is obviously a left over feeling from JAWS. The second portion of the episode takes a look at some Pagan folks who worship sharks and even give their relatives dead bodies to them. I'd say a lot of people will probably be upset with the first portion since this tries to say that sharks are nothing but dangerous killing machines. With that said, those early underwater scenes of the sharks were certainly great to see and especially when you consider this was a long time before Shark Week. Another major plus was the look at the tribe and their religious act towards the sharks. This here is certainly an all around great episode.
