Cyril and Dorothy still cannot settle in their new life in Spain, a fact not helped by the fact that there is a strange smell lingering around their flat. The reasons for which are numerous, the sink overflow pipe is clogged and the rubbish chute is overflowing, the smell being made worse by the stifling Spanish heat. Cyril and Dorothy are driven to distraction by the terrible odour...
The first series of 'Don't Drink The Water' did not end on a particularly high note. Carlos' mother in law ( Muguette De Braie ), who is also the Blakes cleaning lady, appeared several times over the run of the first series and makes her final appearance here. She was a truly unpleasant character, neither amusing nor interesting, rather like the McBlane character from the third series of 'The Fall & Rise Of Reginald Perrin'.
In the late '90's, a similar storyline was used in an episode of the underrated ITV sitcom 'The Baldy Man' ( starring Gregor Fisher ) appropriately titled 'Smell'. It was miles funnier by comparison.
Funniest bit - Dorothy asking Carlos' mother in law to clean out the canary cage. She does so by tipping the cage upside down over the bin, with the canary still in it!
