Olive Is No Match For The Sea Hag
ccthemovieman-127 July 2007
Popeye and Olive are tourists in India. Unfortunately, so is the dreaded Sea Hag and her pet vulture. The hag is planning "the biggest crime caper of my career." She's going to steal this huge jade jewel. The trouble is that anyone who steals the gem is under a terrible curse, so the Hag has to find some dumb dodo to do it for her. Hmmm......here comes Olive.

This is a silly, very juvenile episode, sadly typical of at least half of the 1960-61 cartoons that were put in a series and shown as weekly television programs. They were aimed at small kids but those of us who grew up watching Popeye cartoons were used to funnier and far more clever material than what was presented here.

There were a few good moments, however, in the last two minutes here. In one, a building falls on top of Popeye, who says, "It's a good thing it landed on my head, or I would have been hurt."

Nowadays, people are not really allowed to say or . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . write the official name of the other female character besides Olive Oil voiced in GEM JAM by Mae Q. Her surname is "Sea," but her last name is highly problematic, give the standards of Today. Though this personage looks like a withered ancient horse, or nag, which rhymes with her forbidden term from the 1900's, the same is true for the sort of racy mag in which she'd never ever appear in photographic form. She'd also be unlikely to be pictured in the Good Appetite food journal, as her visage likely would make gourmets gag. Instead of trying to entice her into the s-a-c-k, guys would prefer to coax her into a plain brown grocery bag. As this week's presentation of the coveted gelded statuettes proved, in 2023 females must be handled with the utmost respect--anything less would be a real drag, unless it was story-time hour for some self-proclaimed queens.
