. . . surely is a composition by Stephen Foster, since he wrote so much original music for the flute. The name of this piece was, for an instant, bubbling up to the surface of my memory, but then it suspiciously disappeared. Why is this MYSTERY MELODY such a conundrum? Maybe it's because individuals who play woodwind instruments are so inscrutable. Just last week, a bassoonist shocked everyone by discarding 67 cans--with a retail value of more than two hundred bucks--of perfectly drinkable Coy into a trash bin. Who in their right mind would so flagrantly thumb their nose at all the thirty folks on the Swiss Alps just because five or six months had elapsed from the "Best used by" date stamped on the cans?
