Leading Japanese TV producer Morii Akira and South Korea’s J.Q. Lee are joining forces to create an action-driven series built around a protagonist with special powers.
The pair are both currently riding high, developing or producing additional seasons for their recent hit shows. Morii is currently working on a third season of Netflix original, dystopian series “Alice in Borderland.” Lee is working on Season 2 of Korean hit “All of Us Are Dead.”
The untitled new series is pitched as “an action-packed spectacular drama, featuring a protagonist with unique abilities never before seen in movies or Japanese comics [and] promising an unprecedented viewing experience,” the pair said.
A long-form story arc is being completed before being fleshed out into episodic storylines. Shooting, production schedules and cast details will be announced in the future.
“We cannot disclose specific details at this time, but I can say that this project will feature an ingenious and unheard-of storyline.

The Dragon Ball franchise has amassed a large fanbase over the years and Hollywood had its eye on adapting the popular franchise in live-action. There were a lot of expectations and with the negative track record of manga adaptations on the big screen, it was a big responsibility that 20th Century Fox and director James Wong took with the film.
Super Saiyan 3 Goku battles Majin Buu in Dragon Ball Z
Unfortunately, Dragonball Evolution was widely panned when it was released, with fans finding nothing redeeming about the project. Years later, the film’s writer Ben Ramsey apologized to fans for letting them down and acknowledged that he went onto the project for financial reasons and not as a fan of the franchise.

While multiple Korean TV series have connected with global audiences, Japan’s production committees, terrestrial broadcasters and talent agencies have kept their TV industry tightly focused on a local market.
Anime and variety have long remained the Japanese TV industry’s best-known exports, while the premium end of the spectrum has largely escaped Japanese producers. That is despite multinational shows like Hulu’s “Shogun,” HBO’s “Tokyo Vice” and Netflix’s “House of Ninjas” underscoring the potentially substantial overseas interest in Japan-set live-action drama.
“House of the Owl,” set to begin airing on Disney+ and Hulu from next week, is both an outlier and a potential mold breaker.
A crime thriller about a behind-the-scenes political fixer and his chafing rivalry with his son, “House of the Owl” was conceived as a five-season ride along the lines of “House of Cards” or “Succession.” But overcoming the obstacles on the way to...

Kiyotaka Oshiyama, director of the upcoming anime film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga Look Back, hinted that he is aiming to create the film differently from the manga.
In his comment, Oshiyama acknowledged the similarities in the creative processes between animators/animation directors and manga artists, saying that they approach their works in an identical manner.
He further elaborated on his personal connection to the story, stating, he could resonate with Fujimoto’s inspiration to create Look Back. And because of this, Oshiyama felt that he could create a movie adaptation of the work, which he could personally relate to.
“When I read manga, I was not only deeply moved by the story, but I also resonated with the passion of Tatsuki Fujimoto, the author of Look Back. That’s why I felt that I could make this into a film that I could personally relate to.”

After myriad failures, Netflix finally seems to have learned the formula to successfully translate anime and animated features into live action, as seen from their recent adaptations of classics like One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Alice in Borderland. The streaming conglomerate’s latest venture, the newly released adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, is another step in that positive direction, which, albeit not flawless, has the potential to carry forward the Avatar universe, spanning through various spin-offs and print media continuations.
One of the major factors that acts both as an advantage and a drawback in the case of such adaptations is the chance of tweaking the original structure while retelling a narrative, which is occasionally done to include hints for an upcoming storyline. In an attempt to do something similar, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has jam-packed its first season with a number of teases, including Easter eggs,...

There are a lot of shows based on reality television that have been coming out of the Southeast Asia Belt. The most notable are Squid Game from Netflix Korea and Alice in Borderland from Netflix Japan. Both revolve around an in-universe TV show and the drama around it. There are games, rounds, elimination, a crowd favorite participant, and a winner. Directed by Yanyong Kuruangkura, this Thai Netflix original show is a satirical take on all the reality dating shows and the extent to which women are objectified for the male gaze.
Ready, Set, Love is a six-episode-long miniseries, with each episode having a run time of more than an hour. The show is about Day, a grocery store employee taking part in the annual Ready, Set, Love reality show, which showcases five eligible men who are put on the market, who get to choose their date and possibly the love of their life.

When Johnny Depp Earned Over $50 Million For A Brief Cameo(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Johnny Depp is known for playing quirky characters, and he even makes them iconic, be it his Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Edward Scissorhands, or Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In the 2000s, Depp was at the peak of his career, and the makers did not hesitate to pay millions to get him for a role, especially if it was a fantasy film, even for a few minutes. This leads us to the time when he took home a staggering amount for his role in Alice in Wonderland.

Netflix is expanding its viewership data transparency with the release of its first biannual report covering six months of streaming habits on the platform, revealing for the first time how licensed content like USA Network drama “Suits” performs alongside the streamer’s originals.
The new report, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” covers more than 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours viewed between January-June 2023. It includes: 1) hours viewed for every title (both Netflix original and licensed TV shows and movies) watched for more than 50,000 hours during that period; 2) the premiere date for any Netflix original TV series or film; and 3) whether a title was available globally.

The “death game” sub-genre sees ordinary people fight for survival through murderous games, puzzles, and exercises. These heightened stories have become so popular because of their tendency to turn torture and suffering into a twisted form of entertainment — a concept that feels increasingly authentic with each passing year. There are dozens of anime that fit the murderous death game mold between Deadman Wonderland, Danganronpa, and Gantz. However, there are also a handful of series that specifically follow Takashi Miike’s As the Gods Will and Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game’s example, where childish recreational games and activities become the competitive tools of these characters’ destruction. Kaiji, Liar Game, Death Parade, Alice in Borderland, and Btooom! all follow this model to some extent. As the Gods Will predates Squid Game by six years, but there’s fascinating crossover between these two death game stories. As the Gods Will is the...

Korean crime-action webtoon “Knuckle Girl” is being adapted as an original film production for Amazon’s Prime Video. It is structured as a Korea-Japan co-venture.
The narrative revolves around a promising woman boxer, Ran, who takes on school bullies and participates in illegal bouts. When her sister is kidnapped by a criminal gang, Ran must risk her own life, by breaking into the underworld wearing brass knuckledusters, rather than boxing gloves.
The film is directed by Chang, the Korean director who goes by a single name and whose 2014 film “The Target” debuted in the Midnight screening section at Cannes. Writing credits go to Yoo Gap-yeol, whose “Emergency Declaration” also debuted in Cannes, in 2021, and Jeong Byeong-sik (“The Villain”) who wrote the adaptation.
Despite the Korean pedigree, the film stars Japanese female actor Miyoshi Iyaka, who achieved fame with 2010 film “Confession” and stars in both seasons of Netflix’s Japanese dystopian thriller “Alice in Borderland.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being discussed here wouldn't exist. This article contains spoilers for "One Piece."
We've seen so many live-action adaptations of stories that have been previously told in animation in just the past decade, from Disney classics to beloved anime. And it's easy for creatives to feel the need to try and "fix" or change elements of the characterization for live-action. Sometimes these changes are for the better, like correcting caricatures from insensitive times, but sometimes they feel arbitrary and make the characters unrecognizable. Somehow, the live-action "One Piece" show has the perfect balance of changing just enough to make these cartoon characters work in real life while staying true to the 2D characters audiences have loved for over 25 years.

Television is notorious for its unpredictable outcomes. Some series achieve instant acclaim, while others fade into obscurity.
The question of why some series take a second season to catch on is increasingly compelling as streamers seem readier than ever to ax underperforming new shows. But could that mean missing out on the next hot show? The latest example is Amazon Prime Video’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” After a solid debut, its second season saw an explosive 250% growth in demand.
For every “Summer,” though, there’s a first-season hit that flops in its sophomore season. The most striking illustration of this is “Tiger King,” which saw its demand plummet by 67% in its second season.

Netflix’s reality TV show Physical: 100, aired from January 24 to February 21, 2023. It featured 100 highly trained athletes competing in a succession of challenging tasks. Remember Squid Game? Or Alice in Borderland? Did you like them? Well, if you did, then you cannot miss this either. The only difference is that Physical: 100 was real. The competition was based on both physical endurance and mental strength, and each participant sought to be the last one standing. Why? Because the winner would take home $240,000 (300 million South Korean won). Each stage of the competition required not just physical...

Netflix is to release its Japanese live action film “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead,” on Aug. 3.
The horror comedy film is based on the hit manga (comic book series) by Aso Haro and Takata Kotaro that debuted in the Shogakukan magazine Monthly Sunday Gene-x in October 2018. It has also spawned an animated series that plays on Hulu in North American and other territories.
The underlying comic is a wackily original melding of the salaryman gag manga – a popular genre in Japan seldom exported abroad – with the sort of zombie holocaust story that has become a Hollywood staple.
The story follows overworked office worker Akira (portrayed by Akaso Eiji) who, in the wake of a zombie apocalypse, is more excited at not having to go to work than worried about fending off the undead. He comes up with 100 things to do before turning into a zombie himself and embarks...

Netflix needs to step up its investment in original content. This is a tall order however as data shows how the pace of growth in demand for Netflix’s originals has lagged its rivals, according to Parrot Analytics data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.
Competitors are growing their originals slate at a faster rate, which means that Netflix’s global share of demand for streaming originals hit another record low of 37.9% in the first quarter. This is down from 55.7% in the first three months of 2020, when HBO Max, Peacock and Paramount+ had yet to make an appearance.
Historically, Netflix has held onto a lead over Hulu and HBO Max in audience demand for its content. Going forward, it will have to play catch-up to Max, a stark turnaround showing the growing competitive stakes in streaming.

Everyone says: “I love you,” at least in Lille, where Japanese star Tomohisa Yamashita – in town to promote “Drops of God,” which premieres on Apple TV+ on April 21 – brought fans to tears. With one admitting that thanks to his 2005 series “Nobuta Wo Produce,” where he played the character of Akira, she decided not to commit suicide 14 years ago.
“You saved my life,” she said.
In between interacting with a clearly overwhelmed audience, Japanese singer, dancer, talk show host and actor discussed his multifaceted career, one that started when he was just 11 years old.
“When I was a child, there was a series on TV and the main role was played by a teen. I realized there were stars my age and reached out to agencies for auditions.”
In 2004, he joined boy band News.
“The producers brought us together and said: ‘O.K, you will be in a band. It was so sudden.

Slowly but surely, the global TV market is shifting.
Whether it’s mainly due to the rise of streaming platforms, the rush for international imports brought on by a worldwide production shortage, or an audience finally taking advantage of a wealth of options, series in languages other than English are in the middle of a boom.
While some shows have certainly helped spur that influx of new fans (including ones that can be found below), the nature of the modern TV world is that there are precious few shows anymore that become can’t-miss phenomena. Netflix recently amended its weekly Top 10 report to include viewing totals in English and non-English categories, where (to the extent that those numbers are accurate and transparent) the top slots in the latter frequently outpace the former.
Many of these shows are unofficial litmus tests for the TV world at large. Premises that seemed inherently...

Growth of premium video services in Southeast Asia accelerated in the second half of 2022, to reach 48.4 million paid subscriptions, according to a new report. But the same analysis sees growth slowing and costs accelerating.
The latest report from Media Partners Asia, “Sea Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics” shows 48.4 million paid online video subscriptions at the end of 2022 in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The full year saw 11.8 million net new customers, with 7.3 million of that total coming in the second half, including 4.6 million in the fourth quarter. Indonesia accounted for half of the increase.
The current year is likely to be tougher. “2023 is likely to be heavily focused on customer retention, churn management and implementing price increases,” said Vivek Couto, executive director at MPA. “Key players will continue to invest in localization and the strategic marketing of premium Korean, U.S. and sports content, but against the background...
