Wardrobe notes on actress Carol Thurston.
chm200627 September 2021
In this episode, the actress Carol Thurston is vacuuming at home when Broderick Crawford stops by to break news that her husband was killed in the line of duty. She is not wearing a bra in this or any of her scenes. No attention is ever drawn to it by the script, nor was it to be political or sexual. I just happened to notice and I am adding this review for nostalgia and fashion history purposes, not to be lascivious. I only hope reading this review will make you giggle and wonder why, as I did. Especially because in 2021, the cars and the clothing and home interiors on HIGHWAY PATROL are incredible to see. The scripts and the acting are pretty strong too. But I have never noticed braless women on tv reruns until the late 70's.

Maybe the costume department was trying to draw contrast between her regular-normal-pretty housewife character and the other featured actress, Cece Whitney, who brought all the 1950's blonde glamor, cone shaped boobs and jet black painted arched brows. Both characters also had awesome living rooms!

Interesting and unusual episode

Warning: Spoilers
As far as I have gone Inside this very good TV show, this episode is a total drama and not crime flick tale. The story has already been told above. See for yourself, a rather psychological topic, concerning the difficulties for couples to accept the burden of police officers, with their families and so on...

A moral tale, that also emphasize the importance to wives to accept what their husbands are involved with, to protect and serve the public service.

Moral, predictable, but still interesting for this TV show rather focused on crime schemes.

I think I won't be tired of this TV series.

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best episodes. It starts out on a sad note, but the Patrolman's wife (who we all thought was just shuffled off the show) becomes an integral part of the story later when another wife has to make a tough decision. Of course, Dan tries his best to be "caring, and feeling" (in 1957, THAT must have been a real chore), but it was Patty who was the best at it, giving Linda a look at what was a deep community, and how they all were support to her. Very good ending, also, to a great episode.

Shifting gears here

Warning: Spoilers
"Officer's Wife" is most definitely a different sort of story line for Highway Patrol. Right away, we get to see officer Jerry March get shot and killed by a criminal who is himself shot to death.

What follows is the fallout from this, and the effects on both the widow, as well as a fellow patrolman and his family. Even given the limitations of 1950s television, this is a very effective outing that shows the human cost of working for the Highway Patrol.

The acting, as always, doesn't disappoint, and Broderick Crawford's Dan Mathews has a lot more dimensions to him than Dragnet's Jack Webb. No disrespect is meant toward Mr. Webb, who was a pioneer in his own right. However, Mr. Crawford already had won an Academy Award, and clearly had a presence that could be more imposing, yet show empathy-truly a winning combination!

Even among the fine outings of Highway Patrol, this one is a real standout!
