One can perceive a certain manipulation of the events in the attempt to elicit some sympathy for Betty and - in my case - failing. I am European and I never heard about this case until I started watching this series, therefore I had no prejudice, not knowing any of the parties involved.
From my point of view, the show focuses on Betty way too much. It has a tunnel vision on the events and in each episode Betty is portrayed in a more sympathetic way than Dan. "You should understand her" the authors seem to say "Her parents were horrible, she was groomed to be a wife and mother, she was betrayed and deceived".
That is true, but in return she refused to accept reality with a minimum of grace, let alone dignity. She overacted, insulted viciously her ex and his girlfriend, disrespected anybody involved with the case, pretended to be regally maintained by a man towards whom she showed nothing but hatred. If you revers genders, you would call that person a crazy stalker and in need to be restrained once and for all, without any sympathy.
Amanda Peet does a good job with a monstrous character and definitely steal the show, but that does not make the script more palatable.
