A fitting, dramatic finale.

They saved the best for last, and the series ends on a high. It has been consistent the whole way through, and I guess the theme that's run the whole way through is tension, in this concluding part we get to see those tensions spill over, with deadly consequences.

Fair to say, it's been a slow burner, but that's exactly how it was penned many years ago. The pacing is very deliberate.

Decadent production values once again, although on my screen it was awfully dark at times, despite efforts to increase the brightness.

Superb acting, Gemma Arterton was excellent, but how good was Aisling Franciosi! I cannot wait to order this on blu ray, and get immersed in this story once again.

I hope next year we get the seasonal Agatha Christie drama.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, 8/10.

The final episode sees Sister Ruth heading for a confrontation with Sister Clodagh.

Sister Adela has noticed a licentious behaviour of Clodagh towards Mr Dean and admonishes her about it. The viewer gets flashbacks of Clodagh with her beau, before she went to a convent.

However it is Ruth who becomes increasing nasty and hysterical. She also makes her play for Mr Dean and gets rebuffed.

The ending is faithful to the book and the film version. I have no idea why some people are complaining about it.

Unfortunately the drama seemed dragged out. It was too padded for a three part series. I also wondered if they even needed Oscar winner Jim Broadbent for such a small role. It seems him and Diana Rigg were only there to add prestige to keep the American co producers happy.

The film version was of its time and by no means perfect. Some of the cast were browned up. Ironically Deborah Kerr who played Sister Clodagh was actually born in India. Therefore an updated Gothic melodrama could had worked much better as a two hour movie.
