Pretty good, could have been a classic.
Sleepin_Dragon26 June 2022
After attacking and robbing health spa owner Elsie, Finbar Finch is imprisoned for four years, he vows to get even.

Twenty minutes in, I was preparing to write a somewhat negative review, I thought the early stages of this one were a little silly, that humour was perhaps at odds with the story itself, which was actually really good.

It does get better as it progresses, and it is saved by a pretty brilliant ending. With a few tweaks this really could have been a classic episode. I genuinely loved the twist at the end, it was so unexpected, and so well delivered.

Arguably too many silly moments, Mrs McCarthy felt like Frank Spencer at times, her face mask, her trip in the mud bath, they were amusing moments, but I'm not sure they were needed.

The best element for me, was actually Ryan Gage, who played the wonderfully named Finbar Finch, he's an actor or some pedigree, Endeavour fans will I'm Sure recognise him, I thought was great here, very charismatic.

If I heard the name Elsie barked out again, I will scream, every two seconds it was Elsie, Elsie.

Very nearly excellent, a few flaws too many, 7/10.

The Enigma of Antigonish
Prismark106 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Finbar Finch was an ex con who was given a second chance by Captain Peters who runs a health spa with his wife.

Finch attacked his wife Elsie and was jailed for four years. He threatened revenge.

Now he is out of jail. Elsie is frightened that Finch will bother her. She was left distraught and with a limp after the attack.

Finch requests to see Father Brown and tells the padre that he is finally a reformed man. Just as the Father leaves, Finbar is shot dead. His face is blasted off.

Elsie's sister Lola is the most likely suspect for Inspector Mallory. Father Brown is urged by Sid to find the guilty party.

A sinister episode with an unrepentant and nasty culprit. It is certainly a different type of story and maybe just a tad strong for afternoon television. At least it had a few bits of poetry.

Maybe an important clue was Mallory looking nauseous when he saw the dead body.

Enigma

Warning: Spoilers
I think the casting of Danny Dyer as the villain would have been a masterstroke in The Enigma of Antigonish, but maybe he can appear in a future episode.

Still, this episode was a bit twisting and so forth with mixed identities that we're expected to believe I guess init.

Also a nod to the unsung heroes of Father Brown, the extras: Eve Harding (as the villager), Michael Kavanagh (as ambulance man), Richard Price (villager), and Chris Wilson (the Mayor of Kembleford) Without the extras, Kembleford would be a shell of what it is.

I'm enjoying catching up on Father Brown for daytime television. .

A series too far

All getting a little too far fetched. Good cast but strange casting decisions in some part, the storylines are getting more and more improbable and convoluted. A shame as earlier series were good.

It could have worked better
Johnny_West27 February 2022
The plot itself could have worked, but the casting was horrible. The main villain, Finbarr (Ryan Gage) was just awful. He could not pull it off at all. The lead victim (Robyn Addison) was equally bad as an actress. Her fake limp was comical. She was also way too abrasive to be a sympathetic character, and she was verbally abusive to her husband.

I thought her husband (Peter Singh) was her man-servant or therapist. Towards the end somebody referred to him as Robyn Addison's husband. Hubby was another poor actor, and he was very passive and subservient to his wife. More like an employee than a husband.

Obnoxious Bunty was the main character, and Father Brown once again has been demoted to being a sidekick in his own TV series.

No neckbeards

Get this guy out of here omg! No self respecting man in the 50s would let himself go like that and walk around town. People would ask about it and heckle him and tell him to clean himself up. He wouldn't be let into places because they'd think he was a homeless bum! Mrs McArthy is a woman of standards and she'd force him to shave and clean up. And every woman would tell him to go away. I get this was during the pandemic.. But trying to appeal to lazy people who can't look after themselves isn't getting you viewers and viewers... I like his character but letting him be like that in the show is ridiculous. Also the casting for this episode was terrible.
