The return of Sid.
Sleepin_Dragon1 May 2020
It seems that there is now an annual trickle of former regulars returning, and it's always something of an event when they do. It's always great to see Sid back.

Alex Price steps effortless back into the role of Sid, and it's fair to say he adds something.

As a mystery it's pretty good, it isn't a favourite, but that's more to do with the constraints on time, if this was a two part story I think it would have worked incredibly well, it felt a little rushed at times.

A very good ending, and an unexpected conclusion.

Enjoyable, 7/10.

Twists and Red Herrings

A surprisingly complex story to fit into 45 minutes. Father Brown never seems to consider the possibility that the main suspect might be guilty, but almost every other guest becomes a possibility at some point.

There are some contrivances, of course - coincidences and lucky guesses - but the plot is entertaining and the characters are vaguely likeable. Even Inspector Mallory avoids the worst pantomime characteristics in this episode.

The return of an occasional character might stop it being the best introduction to this series, but the writing and acting are good enough to keep it entertaining.

Sid and Maeve
safenoe9 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Here Sid falls in love with Maeve, and despite the racial barriers in 1950s society (this was pre-Enoch Powell before his infamous Rivers of Blood speech, and well before the United Kingdom had an Indian prime minister) the romance blossoms. Maeve hasn't returned in subsequent episodes so it's not really clear if she will return.

Anyway, this episode is worth watching, especially Sid's poignantly sad observations about life in Africa where he receives bigger tips than the black locals, and it's left unsaid about discrimination against the black Africans. The ending in this episode was poignant.

I've never liked sid and his scruffy return leads to an ok episode.
