It's a harrowing story.

The first part shows the events on that tragic 1985, where the Bamber family, with the exception of Jeremy are all shot dead. Sheila is suspected of killing them, before turning the gun on herself.

I think it's a good start, the production values are terrific, it looks so good, clothes, fashions, cars etc are all on point.

I enjoyed it, it's a well known case, pretty well told, the only real issue I had was the hilarious accent of Stephen Graham, I am a huge fan of his, I love what he does, but would a Welsh actor have been a better choice? It's about as Welsh as a Polar Bear named Sven.

I appreciate that this is based on a true story and you have to respect the feelings of those affected but this is so very slow moving. The major incident is intense and the severity of it is portrayed very well. It takes time for all the characters and their relationship to one another to be understand. Several big TV actors and the retro cars and clothes will keep people watching.

Dissapointing by the numbers crime

This first episode plodded away at a snails pace with a disappointing script lacking in any nuance or new revelation so I wonder what was the point? Presenting distressing scenes about child murder without showing us anything new is in my opinion deplorable.

As a true crime fan I have read a lot about the case including the book it was based on and another far more interesting book by Scott Lomax which presents a different view and explores the quite considerable evidence of Jeremy Bamber's innocence. In true ITV sensational tabloid style, the writer isn't interested in exploring two sides of a story but rather clubbing us over the head with a sledgehammer of Bamber's guilt. I had imagined like Making A Murderer this drama might explore both sides and let the audience decide. Apparently not. Poorly researched, the first episode was riddled with inaccuracies that while presented as truths in court have since been disproved. It seemed to be all about confirming the police and court view that Bamber was a scheming, evil killer canoodling and laughing with his girlfriend within hours of his family's deaths.

ITV has done well recently with dramas like Little Boy Blue and A Confession but those dramas had nuance and a reason to be made, a point of view we had never seen. ITV did a Bamber is guilty drama years ago not long after the trial so why bother doing it again?

Also not impressed that ITV would show this when only a week ago The Guardian ran a story about new evidence proving Jeremy Bamber's innocence and there are legal proceedings under way. How is this not tampering with justice and prejudicing any future appeal? ITV should be held to account for this tabloid style gung-ho attitude to justice.

On C4 Deadwater Fell showed how you do a family anhilation drama with pace, intrigue and nuance. Watch that, not this dross. I won't be coming back for more and wish I hadn't bothered!

Warning: Spoilers
A true life crime drama for ITV that is not written by Jeff Pope.

This is the true story of Jeremy Bamber (Freddie Fox) who was convicted for the murder of his parents, his sister Sheila and her twin boys at their family farmhouse in Essex in 1985. The motive was his parents inheritance.

Bamber has always maintained his innocence and before this show was broadcast, the newspapers ran stories that he planned another bid to clear his name.

In this first episode, the police led by DCI Taff Jones (Stephen Graham) seemed to think that Sheila who suffered from schizophrenia might had shot them all and then killed herself, even though it meant shooting herself twice with a shotgun.

I know this was a protracted real life case as another policeman was more sceptical about the crime scene and the manner of the deaths. However I thought the first episode was plodding and padded. It is a six part series. The only point of interest was Graham's Welsh accent.

Maybe if Jeff Pope wrote this he would had approached this from another angle and sharper writing.

Astounded

Visually, the house, fixtures, fittings even the wallpaper of the farmhouse are incredibly accurate. But that's where the accuracy stops! Nothing inn this episode is based on actual evidence. Yes well maybe it can be argued that this was the evidence at trail but to omit so many facts is mind blowing. Obviously the research was somewhat lacking! Where was the mention that a gun was seen in a window? Where is the call from Nevill to the police, why was the onus put on the dog being put in a cupboard take more screen time than the fact firearms teams were called because movement was observed in the house? Incredible!!! It was not factual i was so disappointed! I was looking forward to an objective drama with actual facts of the case not a witch hunt. Anyway let's hope it gets better and actually reveals the facts not the fairy tale of inaccuracy this is proving to be so far.

Dull and inaccurate

This fantasy drama is NOT a true account of the case. The facts are sparce and innacurate based on books that simply set out to profit from the tragedy.
