Tense, Hitchcockian New Thriller
michaelc-5094019 October 2023
A review for "Robert Mann's R BnB" (Mannatee Films)starring Ryon Thomas, Bryanna McQueeney, Gloria Mann, Agnes Artych, Alex Galick and Marco Reese Maldonado: An enjoyable thriller that just dropped on multiple streaming platforms, with the unfolding story punctuated by flashbacks, adding to the overall tension.

In a post-modern play on the classic "Old Dark House" motif, an affluent New York couple visiting an Air B&B too late realizes that they're being secretly video recorded by a murderous couple, with a Hitchcockian reveal at the end. Filmed in New York's beautiful but brooding Hudson Valley region during the autumn, the excellent cinematography by film veteran Al Satterwhite raises the film to a higher standard than one might expect. With a wonderfully creepy old Dutch-style gate house as the eponymous B & B, this reminds of the old Hammer Films horrors.

The creepy Kylo (played by Alex Galick, of Fractured) and absolutely unhinged Aubree (played by Savannah Whitten, of Impossible Monsters and Lilith) are standout characters, but the absorbing loner character of Jennifer Davies, the tough, overprotective sister of the protagonist (grippingly and powerfully played by Gloria Mann of Point Break, The Lennon Report, The Cassie Confession) is an especially welcome release to the building tension.

Overall, R BnB is a new thriller well worth watching.

Solid Concept, but Not Necessarily Anything New
Reviews_of_the_Dead9 October 2023
This is a movie that I got the chance to see thanks to Kim from Level 33 Entertainment. I'll be honest, for these screeners I tend to ensure they're in horror and 2023 releases before checking them out. I don't like to influence my thoughts by reading synopsis or anything like that. For this, I did see the title and knew that this would take place at a Bed and Breakfast. That usually means isolation and I'm there for that.

Synopsis: a wealthy Manhattan couple celebrates their first-year wedding anniversary at a secluded Airbnb, only to realize that they're being secretly videotaped. But why?

We start this off with a couple in a car and we see them driving through a wooden area. Ryan Davies (Ryon Thomas) is married to Mia (Bryanna McQueeney) and they're our couple from the synopsis. Ryan was just released from the hospital as it sounds like he is having chest pains. The more we learn, it has something with his digestive system though. They stop off to see his sister, Jennifer (Gloria Mann). She doesn't like Mia, thinking that she married her brother for his money. This causes a rift between the siblings. She does give him different things to help with his ailments. She isn't thrilled to hear them going out to the middle of nowhere for the weekend, especially if he has another flare up.

The place they're going is ran by Kylo (Alex Galick) and Aubree (Savannah Whitten). They're helped by Polina (Agnes Artych) and Haden-Marie (Marco Reese Maldonado). Our married couple arrives and they love the place they're staying. There is an interesting scene with Mia in the shower and Polina slowly opens the door, watching her. Ryan also has an odd interaction with the couple running this place. They seem off but still friendly. Our couple is invited to dinner, but they decline.

That night, Ryan almost hits Haden-Marie who is walking the dark road with a shovel. When Ryan apologizes later, he states that it wasn't him. We also get flashes into the future that things take a dark turn. Kylo and Aubree are insistent on spending time with their guests. They do have dinner together and they share fun spots for them to go. Ryan has issues with the items to help with his medical condition. We see there could be more there. This fun weekend getaway turns into a nightmare and a fight for survival.

That is where I'll leave my recap and introduction to the characters. Where I want to start is that I do enjoy this basic premise. Not one that is necessarily new, but I like what they do with it. There is this idea of going out into the middle of nowhere to spend the weekend and it takes a turn. It is something that could happen to any of us. I'll be honest, I'm a nice guy and will take more than I should so a concept like this frightens me. There is a problem here that this doesn't necessarily do anything to stand out. It is a lower budget effort so I'm not going to come down hard either.

I'll then stick with positives first. We have this couple staying in this remote place. The owners are friendly. They are a bit off, but that doesn't make them psychopaths. You also have Polina and Haden-Marie who are also weird. The basic idea is that either of these couples could make this into a horror/thriller. Ryan finds things in the spot where they're staying that make it creepier as well. Again, this is all good. It isn't necessarily new though.

Sticking with the good, I'll go to the acting. No one is great here, but that aren't bad either. I've not seen any of the cast in anything else so my guess is that they're more amateur. I do like Thomas and McQueeney's dynamic. He is older than her and this gets brought up throughout. I like how it doesn't seem to be an issue for either party though. Mann was solid as this overbearing sister. She has Ryan's interest at heart, but she doesn't go about it the correct way. Galick and Whitten are also good as this odd couple who own the BnB. I also like Maldonado and Artych with how they play their roles as the 'help'. Like I said, no one stands out, but they fit what was needed.

Now let me get to more of my issues and it is filmmaking. I think that the cinematography is good though. The setting is as well. These are positives. My problem is with the editing. It is a misstep to me to edit in things that happen later. It messed with the tone and when it comes to the reveal, there isn't any tension. We know that is where they end up. Keeping it more of a mystery as to who is behind it since you have the owners and the help. That would have helped. The script isn't overly strong so that affects the performances. The effects are limited, which is fine. I'm glad they didn't go CGI heavy there. Other than that, the soundtrack was fine as well. It didn't stand out or hurt either.

In conclusion, this movie uses similar ideas and premises that we've seen before. Overall, I think what they do is fine. The problem is that it doesn't do enough to stand out and there are missteps with the editing for me. I'd say that the acting was solid. It feels amateur, but the performances are good. The isolated location works and this is made well-enough aside from what I'd said. Not one that I can recommend to everyone. For a lower budget effort, this is fine. If you like independent horror like this, I think you'll enjoy this well enough.

My Rating: 5.5 out of 10.

Cheaply and Poorly Made Horror Movie
Kooro778 October 2023
I'll just preface this review by saying it is incredibly rare for me to rate horror movies anything below 4 stars. I try to give low budget movies the benefit of the doubt for at least trying. You can check my past ratings and see that generally I don't write any reviews on here at all and I almost never rate below 4 stars. I decided to make an exception for this 'movie.'

This isn't typical a 'low budget' indie horror movie. I enjoy low budge horrors especially when they are able to punch above their weight. Alas this isn't a low budget horror movie, this is just cheap junk. I actually paid $2 to rent it... which is $3 more than it should be.

To start with the acting is incredibly wooden, like the actors probably have no experience acting in a film of any kind. You know those high school and college film projects where people just get their friends and random people on campus to act in their project? Yeah, that's basically the quality of acting in this movie.

Also, it appears to be directed and edited by someone who is a very amateur filmmaker and doesn't have much knowledge at all about film editing or directing. This movie has so many poorly done cuts and scene transitions that it breaks any potential for immersion.

Basically, anyone who gives this movie anything above 5/10 is almost certainly part of the making of this film and should be embarrassed.

Don't be fooled by the high ratings
jason-9743827 November 2023
This is C level, maybe even D level, movie making. I could have given it 4 for the honest effort. You can't rightly blame the makers of it to give it the old college try, but you just can't pull it off with bad acting, bad writing, bad direction, bad structure, bad chemistry.

If you read through the reviews with the high ratings, you can discern their falsity. It's not that difficult, and I knew going in there was a very good chance that's what they were, false and simply trying to boost its rating. You can surmise that from the trailer alone, actually.

Consider my words a public service announcement for the savings of a few dollars. For superb horror, watch "The Changeling" instead, from 1980, with George C. Scott. That's how it's done.

I May Never Stay at Another Air BnB Again!
hbtqf18 October 2023
R BnB is a solid indie thriller that fires on all cinematic cylinders.

Artfully directed by Robert Mann, (who also is credited as the writer and editor), takes us on a fantastically twisted ride that is reminiscent of Hitchcock and "Get Out". The movie holds you, enrapt from it's gorgeous opening and heart pounding music by Bart Hendrickson, to it's surprising end. The entire cast is first rate: Ryon Thomas, Bryanna McQueeney, Alex Galick, Savannah Whitten, Marco Reese-Maldonado, Agnes Artych and especially Gloria Mann (Point Break, The Lennon Report, The Cassie Confession) (who plays Thomas's protective sister) who gives a stunningly powerful performance highlighted by her martial art skills; it is not to be missed!

The beautiful cinematography is by Al Satterwhite We have all stayed at an Air BnB, but I guarantee after watching R BnB, you will think twice before staying at another one.

No my God this is sooo bad!
ginapennesi8 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Rented this to watch with my nephew and I should have thrown the money on the ground, at least there was a chance it could be put to better use. Crapola on a paper plate. No context, not much of a plot, dialogue was trash, edited together like confetti and chewing gum and angles that a toddler with a camera could have taken. Just so bad. You never know what the problem is with the sister, the weird young couple disappears, No explanation for anything. So many boundaries crossed that nobody in their right mind would have stayed. Characters delivering dialogue as if it was written on a card behind the person they're speaking to. Just bad. The wacko couple chooses the weirdest way to have a kid. Never watch this! Ugh.

Great suspenseful thriller
cbenjisgirl22 October 2023
I loved this thriller. It was filmed in the Hudson Valley where I live. I loved how they captured our beautiful fall foliage. They picked the perfect spot for this movie. It was so suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat. I stay in Airbnb's often, now I will be looking for cameras. The hosts of the Airbnb in this movie were so creepy. They picked the perfect actors to portray them. I have watched Gloria Mann in other things and loved her. You will love Gloria Mann in this she did not disappoint. Gloria Mann played the perfect overbearing, overprotective sister. Great movie to watch on a rainy fall afternoon.

Gripping thriller set in the Hudson Valley
epearl-0896724 October 2023
I was immediately into the characters and the premise of RBnB--the gorgeous couple, the edgy sister, the strange BnB keepers. And of course the gorgeous Hudson River Valley! The further into the story you get, the closer to the edge of your seat you sit! In truth, I've now watched the movie more than once, and I still find it edgy! What exactly is motivating all of this behavior? Do we really know these characters or not? What exactly happens at the end?

Watch it for yourself! It'll grab you and keep you there! I loved it!!!Hats off to the great team, the great location, the great sound! Will there be a sequel?

This movie scarred me!
lgoldman-460006 October 2023
Was not expecting to be drawn into this story so quickly.

The actors were superb, and I loved the scenes with the drones. Well Done! I believe the movie was filmed in the Hudson Valley, New York, which is why the scenery is spectacular. The movie immediately startles you, to the very last camera shot. If you like suspense/thriller movies, this one is for you. R BnB might make you to think twice, when next planning your next weekend getaway. This movie has a Hitchcock twist, which will make movie viewers think of the Carry Grant scene in, "North by aborthwest". I would definitely recomend this movie.

SOLID THRILLER MOVIE. KEPT ME ON EDGE!
jaydillen-308293 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Great movie. I felt on the edge of my seat and could never guess what would happen next.

I am Really obsessed with Bryanna McQueeney, she is an incredible actress, extremely beautiful and did a great job in this film. It was terrifying seeing her being dragged away by her these psychopaths at her Airbnb or "Rbnb".

I love the story telling done by Robert Mann who also did a good job directing this film. He is a budding talent getting ready to bloom. Excited to see his next film.

There is a lot of good talent in this film just budding for huge commercial success.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, you should.

Kept My Interest
lzwicker9 February 2024
I don't normally watch thriller movies but have to say that R BnB kept my interest. There really wasn't a lag where I was hoping it would move faster. I waited for the ending, but it wasn't what I expected at all. It definitely left me thinking! I did enjoy the scenery and beautiful location. I thought that Robert Mann had a great idea for this movie. Love the surprise in many of the scenes and thought Jennifer definitely got into her older sister role! Overall, I enjoyed the film but will probably stay at more hotels in the future. Great job to the entire team. Looking forward to Robert's next movie!
