Stopping a protean criminal who travels around the Mediterranean
myriamlenys13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A female journalist is contacted by an acquaintance of hers, a certain "Didou". The man, who is the father of an old school chum, tells her that his family has disappeared. So far the gendarmerie hasn't done much searching. Didou, however, is convinced that his loved ones have become victims of a terrible crime. He can even name a likely suspect...

"Rencontre avec un tueur" is a violent thriller (or even thriller/action) movie from France. Although I wouldn't call it a bad movie it isn't a triumph either. In my humble the screenplay needed further pruning, polishing and fine-tuning. As it stands, the screenplay feels like a draft rather than the final product.

Moreover, "Rencontre" grows more "tiré par les cheveux" as it continues. Is this how journalists or gendarmes collect information, conduct an investigation and interact with their hierarchy ? Really ?

Still, "Rencontre" has a number of clever surprises up its sleeve. It also features a memorably creepy villain, in the person of a protean fraudster who steals boats, businesses and lives. (A good performance by Arnaud Giovaninetti, here.) Far from lurking in the shadows, this criminal feels perfectly at ease in front of a bunch of cameras. Indeed, he is so plausible, eloquent and charming that he can manipulate public opinion and inject falsehoods into an official investigation.

Give such a person more time and opportunity, and he may well morph into a local celebrity, a spokesman for a chamber of commerce, or even a politician. Not exactly a comforting thought...
