The CBI investigate a murder linked to a $50,000,000 art theft
Tweekums5 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
When the vice president of a company is murdered in the company boardroom it is rightly assumed that his death is connected to the theft of a fifty million dollar painting. The possibility that the dead man was involved in the theft can't be ignored; he had recently made a payment of twenty thousand dollars to a small art gallery; when Jane and Van Pelt investigate they discover he had paid an artist to make two copies of the painting. The CBI suspect that the painting was probably stolen for the Russian oligarch who had been out-bid for it when it was last sold; conveniently he is in California but inconveniently he is travelling on a diplomatic passport so can't be touched… of course that won't stop Jane!

This episode was rather fun; the case threw up a decent number of suspects and featured plenty of great scenes. When the killer is finally revealed it wasn't too obvious. Simon Baker was on top form as Jane; he has several great scenes; the best involving the man who copied the paintings, the Russian Oligarch and his conversation with the company CEO who doesn't seem to bothered about the death of his vice president, who happens to be his son in law. Amanda Righetti also gets a chance to shine when Van Pelt accompanies Jane when they see the artist. There are plenty of nice little touches; I liked how the artist added little touches to his copies so they couldn't be passed off as the original… at least not to anybody who carefully inspected the picture. Overall another fine episode with a good blend of mystery and humour.

The Stolen Painting

When the son-in-law of the wealthy executive A. P. Caid is found murdered in his office, Lisbon, Patrick, and the CBI team assume the case. They learn that the victim was married to A. P. Caid's daughter, Stevie Caid that also worked in the company. Further, a 50-million-dollar painting recently bought in an auction by the dealer Kathryn Hawkes for Caid is missing from the wall. The CBI suspect the the Russian Mobster Shirali Arlov, who has diplomatic immunity, if now the owner of the painting. Patrick sets in motion a plan to retrieve the painting and find the killer.

"Paint in Red" is one of the best episodes of "The Mentalist". The plot is funny and full of action and twists. The entertaining conclusion with the cynical Patrick solving the case is hilarious. My vote is nine.
