One of the unique aspects of this episode is a segment involving a British soldier who is used in a scheme by Merrick to open himself up to blackmail, based on the love that dare not share its name. The soldier has a fling with a young Indian man, leaves him his watch, and all of a sudden is a victim of Merrick's scheme to get him to do his bidding. This of course is set up to be the root of twists coming up, and it is a brilliant one because it is a subject rarely discussed in literature or on film in settings of this era, and an issue that is as old as history itself. The way it is presented is in a very gentle and sensitive way, and it really makes the viewer feel sorry for the soldier who becomes a victim of an evil scheme. There are also aspects of certain elements of the earlier episodes that come together here with one character revealing that they knew Hari Kumar in England as a friend, reminding the audience of conversations between Kumar and Daphne early in the miniseries. By bringing all these things together, viewers who have gotten a bit lost on the way start to say to themselves, "Ah!" as everything comes together. It's obvious pictures of brief reappearance of Kumar that he has still never forgotten the late Daphne and is obviously still in love with her. With two more episodes to go, everything that has been put into the big pot begins to make sense, and that makes for a Brilliance yet to come that makes things that were confusing along the long way in the first 12 or 13 hours so much easier to comprehend.
