Sex & Nudity

  • Nudity is shown in a handful of scenes.
  • Naked (barely pubescent) children, naked adults. Full frontal, but not lingeringly sexual.
  • Also, sexual activity between various adults. Free love is a major plot point of the film, as is the fact that the protagonist, a 10-year-old girl, grows up in this environment. She sees the sexuality of adults around her, including activity between her parents and other people, sometimes simultaneously.
  • Three children go around in underpants quite a lot. There is a scene where they are on holiday and the kids climb to the top of a diving platform. They are naked, but seen from a distance. At the top, they are seen close-up but from the waist up. While swimming, a boy's and a girl's genitals are seen fleetingly. Shortly afterwards, while skinny dipping with adults, all that is seen is the occasional butt.
  • There is one female and one male adult full frontal and one scene with a woman in a see-through red dress. Apart from that the nudity consists of an occasional pair of buttocks and some breasts.

Violence & Gore

  • Riot scenes between the squatters and police occur on two consecutive days. It's not gory, but the protagonist's father is shown afterward with a bloody, bruised head, which could be upsetting.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Cocaine is shown on a platter during one of the parties.
  • Not a lot of it, but if memory serves there is some drinking and smoking at a Christmas party.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Again, the riot could be scary, there are some interpersonal issues between the protagonist's parents, as well as the threat of being evicted by the landlord. Also, a girl's hair catches on fire at one point.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Towards the end of the movie, Karo runs away to join an ex-commune family (the two other kids and their parents). She is seen in underpants preparing for bed and given pajamas which she puts on. In the morning, she and the boy are sleeping together in just underpants. They may have attempted to copy what they had seen around them in the commune, however, Karo later refers to the boy as "her brother", so perhaps not much happened.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • An air of mild peril persists throughout most of the movie, threatening eviction; after continual problems Karo's (Anna Franciska Jaeger) parent's relationship dissolves. At one point Karo stays under water a long time. A pet hedgehog is refrigerated and is later shown dead. A male character is verbally abusive to a woman, and seems on the verge of physical abuse.
