Best of Compo

Warning: Spoilers
How can anyone not like a Best of Compo cut and paste episode? If you don't appreciate this episode for what it is, you can not be a true fan of the show.

OK, so it has not been 10 years since Compo died as the title indicates. It's closer to 8 years if we go by transmission dates of the shows or 9 years if we go by when Bill Owen actually died. Either way, this episode was long overdue. This is the first time in 8 years that Compo's image was seen on the screen again and he even gets credited in the opening and closing credits.

The 30 minute episode starts off with Cleggy realizing that today is the ten year anniversary of Compo's death. Nora (off screen) is doing something nasty to Alvin. Alvin visits Cleggy & Truly who go on to describe some of Compo's misadventures that he shared with either Nora, Cleggy or Truly throughout the years. The first half of the show focuses on the relationship between Nora & Compo. The second half of the show focuses on the relationship between the boys & Compo.

Many memorable clips of Compo are included in this special but naturally many, many, many more were not part of this special. However, how is it possible to sum up Compo's 27 or so years on LOTSW in 30 minutes or less? You can't!!! So sit back and enjoy, "The Best of Compo".

It certainly was not 10 years

A strange episode of Last of the Summer Wine. It features archive clips of Compo.

Clegg realises that it has been 10 years since Compo died. He and Truly recount some tales to Alvin about the misadventures of Compo.

This leads to flashbacks of Compo, getting water thrown at him by Nora Batty. Escapades in motorised vehicles or in boats.

There are 3 lengthy clips from one of his last episodes, Last Post and Pigeon.

The trouble is this episode was broadcast in 2008. Bill Owen died in 1999 and his final episodes were shown in 2000.

So it was not 10 years in any way or form. I do wonder if there were some other reasons for the clips show. I can only think the death of Kathy Staff might have lead to the episode being drastically rewritten.

It really wasn't ten years.

Clegg, Truly and Alvin look back on the life of Compo, it's been ten years since his death, the trio recount some of his famous moments.

For many people, myself included Bill Owen was Last of The Summer wine, it was his joyous face and comedy that made the show so successful. It feels fitting that he's honoured, but this was a strange time to do it.

I've looked back, and it was eight years since he appeared, it definitely feels that this one was cobbled together at the last minute, it seems very likely that this was shoehorned in at the last minute.

It has nostalgia, and seeing some of Compo's finest moments is nice, but as a standalone episode, I'm not a fan, it simply serves to remind us how funny the show used to be in its heyday.

5/10.
