Ultra-realism
themissingpatient25 April 2009
The film moves slowly, leaving the audience to wonder. Rich, beautiful, tender and distinctly Canadian.

Had the pleasure of watching the film at the Okanagan International Film Festival, walking out of the theatre I began a conversation with a man who did not speak English very well. He said he had never seen movies like the ones being shown (The Baby Formula, Only) that night. He continued to try to find a way to explain how he felt towards these Independent Canadian films, saying they could not be easily categorized. "Ultra-realism" was what he said finally, asking me if these words made sense. I assured him that they did and for Only, it was a perfect description.

A must see movie
sutherdave28 April 2009
Just saw Only for the second time and I am was just as moved as the first time I saw it.

The two leads, Elena and Jacob are totally believable as regular kids. At a time when children are becoming very self-conscious they provide raw performance that expose all sorts of embarrassing things to each other and the audience. The beauty of the story is found in the grace and ease that each character comes to accept the other for whom they are.

This beauty is supported by the wonderful cinematography that provides a magical landscape that children explore.

It is hard to imagine that many films will ever do as good a job of telling a story about this stage in childhood as Only does. It is just too hard to capture the actors between childhood and puberty. And it is equal has hard to avoid all the commercial clichés about how children should behave in film.

There is nothing in the movie to offend but the viewer must be prepared, like the children in the film to relax and just let things happen. The rewards for doing so are worth it.

An honest beauty
HiThereThisIsMe29 April 2009
The first time I saw Only, I spent hours afterwords wrapped safely in the knowledge that to be human in this world is an almost unbearably sweet and precious thing.

The second time I saw Only, I found myself having a physical reaction, feeling nervousness and excitement of a sort that I haven't had since I was as young as the leads.

I look forward to seeing the film a third time, and many times thereafter.

If you still have any room left in your heart for honesty, innocence and wonder, this is a film worth investigating. That description sounds trite and saccharine, but it's meant with unflinching honesty.

This doesn't even touch on specifics yet, but rest assured that the cinematography, acting, and soundtrack are all perfectly aligned with what I've said above, both in terms of quality and aesthetic.

There is an unwavering beauty underlying all things, and I take this film as proof.

Great Movie
jacqui_morrison24 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
ONLY is filmed in Parry Sound, Ontario and is the story of a friendship between Daniel and Vera. They have one day ONLY to spend together and by walking around and answering questions about themselves like, "If you could only have books or movies what would you have?" They are nice kids and the film evokes an age of innocence. The language is clear and both the main characters (age 12) don't swear or talk about any extreme problems in their lives. Vera is an accomplished poet and the characters have fun together.

Both of the kids have stressors in their lives but don't spend time lamenting about their problems. The kids are character actors and present as genuine, yet precocious, pre-teens.

ONLY is the type of film that Grandparents can take their Grandchildren to and all will enjoy it.

Hopefully Ingrid Venninger will create more films like ONLY.

A Wonderful Captured Moment
barryshaft28 April 2009
I just had the wonderful privilege of viewing this beautiful "captured moment" film. Everything about it just clicked and resonated exquisitely. From the painfully true performances from the film's young leads (a feat in itself) to the simple yet hauntingly emotive cinematography. Keeping it simple is the script's biggest asset, focusing entirely on the mundanely beautiful moments in life. It captured the awkward and boring moments of growing up in a small town. This was such an inspiring film, showing me not only the power of simple, personal storytelling but also in the digital medium itself. I was very happy to have gotten the chance to see this film and I strongly urge others to do the same if they have the opportunity. It's honest film-making to it's very heart.

Gorgeous and wonderful
jkerryyoung27 April 2009
I just saw the film ONLY in its Toronto theatrical release. Absolutely loved it. The film is gentle and loving and hopeful and magical and real. In the Q&A after the screening we learned that the film is 98% scripted and only 2% ad-lib but the actors are so natural that you really do leave the theatre feeling like you have spent the day with them. It reminds us about being 12 when we think that we are smarter than our parents but would rather roll around in fresh snow than talk about it. And that hint of a first love, when you meet someone who really gets you. The use of music is also perfect. The soundtrack is filled with Indie artists which rocks and rolls us through the film.

Lovely
vheimpel-128 April 2009
Lovely film, great to see life as a lonely kid in rural Ontario portrayed so accurately and beautifully. It reminded me of what it was like to be a kid trapped in the place where your parents put you, desperately searching for things that capture your interest, and finding only buzzing power lines, railway tracks and abandoned tennis courts.

The dialogue was simple and natural, as were the performances. The relationship between the two leads builds slowly and naturally. The audience at the screening I was at was made up of both adults and, and both groups seemed to enjoy it equally, which is not an easy thing to pull off. Hope to see more from everyone involved.

Magical Film
thebrykhouse17 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Every once in a rare while you sit in a darkened theater, and you are confronted by beauty and a sprinkling of magic. "Only" gives that gift to the audience. It is a simple story about the first innocent breaths of love and it is told with such honesty and generosity that I talked of little else for days afterwards. There are moments that are still with me. The two kids at the heart of the film are a revelation as they articulate the the awkward power of being lonely and then finding someone to care about, to fall in love with. They speak to each other in half sentences and glances and stolen moments of shear joy, two kids on the cusp of growing up taking comfort and delight in each other. The acting seems so real that it is startling at times and always captivating. The film is not slick and packaged and big, it reminds me of Before Sunrise crossed with Juno, but its intimacy only adds to it's charm, like a secret being shared with the audience. I can not recommend a movie more highly. It is imperfect and truly wonderful. We live in a cynical world where everything is faked and commercial and manipulative and blindingly glossy. This movie is a dandelion, a firefly, a first kiss, something real that warms you with a gorgeous soundtrack. It reminds us that there is beauty in art and film, that beauty does not need to cost a fortune, it merely needs a generous heart.

Sweet, quiet and profoundly moving
itrytobedifferent27 April 2009
This is a sweet movie that grows on you as you watch it. I encouraged my friends to see it with me, and all of them enjoyed it very much as well. Its storyline is simple, but it is played out so flawlessly well that it is much better than many movies with more intricate plots. It's a thoughtful meditation on the lives of two lonely adolescents who, for a day, have the chance to experience a powerful connection between themselves and someone else, a chance, the movie makes clear, that neither of them have too often. As they traipse around the Perry Sound area, discussing everything from whether books are better than movies to their deepest fears, we have the privilege to see their friendship slowly, tentatively and very realistically develop. Watch this movie! It is an absolute treat.

Smart and unassuming Canadian film
EduardoDutra26 April 2009
I just got back from a screening of 'Only' and I must say, I was mightily impressed.

This quiet little film deserves all the accolades and praise bestowed upon it. For starters, the film's two young stars Jacob Switzer and Elena Hudgins Lyle come across so naturally that it's hard to believe the film was scripted - the story literally jumps from the faces and voices of it's 12 and 13 year old stars.

Kudos to all, especially for the two first-time writers/directors (long-time Canadian actors Ingrid Veninger and Simon Reynolds) who pulled off a deceptively simple little gem.

Another feather in the cap for Canadian film.

Great movie..
juneleungyw26 April 2009
Great movie, I like the cinematic techniques used.. the movie was in a slower pace in the beginning, to me it symbolizes a budding friendship... the movie gets more lively towards the end, to me it also reflected the closer friendship of the 2 kids and getting acquainted to each other. Also, the way they use the ipod..in the beginning they are each in their own world, in the middle, they sometimes get out of their own little "music" world and interact with each other..at the end, they listen to each others' music.. to me it symbolizes they get into and became part of the other person's life.. it is so good about independent film. it leaves room for people's imagination.. I love the movie. Great soundtrack too! Great work Ingrid and Simon! I enjoyed the Q&A section at the end of the movie too! :)

Very Sweet Movie!
spaceforlife2 May 2009
I really loved this movie. The two main actors were amazing, especially Jacob Switzer, his style was so natural and believable. What's amazing about this film is that they made a beautiful moving story on a minimal budget, minimal cast, no lights and hand held cameras. It really captures the essence of what it's like to be 12 and the loneliness of that time of change and growth, but not only the loneliness but also the beauty of making a new friend and the slow sweet discovery that happens. The soundtrack is AMAZING and I really hope that it's available for sale at some point, so good! I also really love the use of the natural scenery in this film and the isolation of living in a tourist destination off season.

This movie took me back to my first 'almost' kiss with Toby Kiesewalter at family music camp when I was 13 and he was 11... Oh the memories...

A refreshing work of art.
stephanie-38815 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This film is just what needs to happen in film today. It is well written, with such freshness and innocence that it opens up a whole new space in cinema. I enjoyed everything about it -- the music, the acting, that huge block of cheese, and those little glimpses of Parry Sound.

It was great to see a story with so much subtlety and magic. There were tiny signs of danger everywhere in the script, but they all fizzle out. I kept waiting for something bad to happen, as I'm so conditioned to expecting Drama -- with a capital "D" -- in film, but in this one, it never does. Instead, innocence reigns, and it feels very, very good.
