Not a pleasant smell
guy-bellinger27 September 2011
The only quality of this tedious documentary is its candor : it sure is uncommon to hear Arab people speak as frankly about sex as they do in Danielle Arbid's 2008 short "This Smell of Sex". But if this IS a quality, it is a very unpleasant one, for hearing people talk about nothing else but cocks, pussies, sodomy, cunnilingus and other blow jobs for twenty minutes and twenty-five seconds is an ordeal. Sex can be fun when you HAVE it, but to hear all the crudest details about sexual practices is awfully boring. Moreover, if this film has a style, it seems to me that anyone has one. Using an old unidentified 8mm film and /or a black screen to serve as a backdrop for the conversations mentioned earlier is either a radical artistic device or more simply a smoke and mirrors approach. Anyway, I found it rather frustrating to be offered nothing of interest to see or to hear! The official summary claims that (the protagonists') words and the visual representations create a highly POETIC EROTIC tension (emphasis mine). I am afraid this not my personal definition of either POETRY or EROTICISM. Also, one of the interviewees quite rightly says that sex is even better when there is love, but where is love in this compilation of vulgar sexual comments?
