Today's action-packed thrill ride through the stars begins with George and Rosie playing cards, the latter cheating her rear metal plate off. While this was going on, Astro was hell-bent on getting out of the house for unknown reasons. The tedious card game is interrupted by the Jetsons' new neighbor, Miss Gyro, calling to complain of a pest in her yard: Astro. Without wasting a beat, George races off to get him, while Elroy struggles with his recently befallen task of having to make a video essay on what his father does at work, for a Fathers' Day class assignment. The only problem is, Elroy has no idea what his father does, but clever Jane decides to reprogram their flying video recorder to candidly tape George at work the next day. Problem solved, right? If only it were that simple, because in the Jetsons' world, nothing is simple. Meanwhile, at Miss Gyro's place, Astro as it turns out has taken a liking to her pink poodle Jezebel, and constantly tries to put the moves on her. So after chasing him through a flower garden and getting bit in the ass by a gopher, George manages to wrangle Astro and bring him home. Unable to take a hint, Astro is determined to make Jezebel his own (even though her name should have clued him in, and besides, I'm sure he's had more than his share of bitches in his day, so what's so special about this one?) and takes off the next morning, disguising himself in nothing but a vintage George Jetson Halloween mask, and Rosie actually buys it. The digital dimwit; The real George Jetson returns soon after, having taped himself at work all day. Judging by the way he'd been gloating, it sounds like Elroy's dad has quite the exciting job.
Exciting nothing, it was three straight hours of him sitting in a chair pushing a button. Turns out all the excitement happens when George is off the clock, for once again he had to chase Astro all throughout Miss Gyro's apartment. Determined to keep Astro under his watch all the time even when he's not looking, George programs the video recorder to tape Astro's every movement. It must have really caught a great adventure, for soon George and Astro return home covered in garbage. What happened you may ask? Wait and see. So, due to his father's boring job and what will undoubtedly make him a laughing stock at school, Elroy feigns illness to try and stay home, but Jane managed to see right through him. So, Elroy heads to school, taking what he thinks is the tape of George at work, but when the whole class watches, it's something much better. All caught on tape, and man is that video recorder a wonder. It can edit the footage as it tapes it. We've got wide shots, close-ups, pans, cuts to different angles, even correctly synced audio. How much would you pay? Anyway, all caught on tape, we see Astro escape the Sky Pad apartments via the garbage chute, landing in back of the garbage truck. George gets in the car and races after him. Just as Astro is about to be dropped into the city dump machine and turned into a television set, George hovers above the bin and dangles out of the car to grab him. Unfortunately the engine stalls out, resulting in the car and George falling into the garbage heap. Restarting the space car, they emerge from the refuse triumphant, and very dirty. The class had been on the edge of their seats. What a ride! What a happy accident that Elroy grabbed the wrong tape. The old switcheroo, intentional or not, never, ever fails. And so, George is deemed a hero by the class, and Elroy got a double A+. So it all worked out, but what about Miss Gyro and Jezebel? Well, guess what? Astro's a father! Six mixes of poodle and mutt, or putts. Happy Fathers' Day, George.
I liked this one. It was nice seeing an adventure outside of Spacely Sprockets and it was fun seeing all the crazy misadventures and mayhem George had to endure to wrangle Astro away from that little pink hussy. Also, was that Mr. Tweeter as the bus driver? I think it was. I find it odd that Judy wasn't in this episode since she's George's other kid. I guess there wasn't a way of working her in, since it was more about Elroy's relationship with George, and I'm glad an episode was dedicated to them. Elroy needed more development as a character, because besides being a boy genius and precocious (a character trait), he's also a bit of a pussy. Anyway, "Far Out Father" is a far out adventure. Check it out. I'm glad I did and I'm glad to have critiqued all 75 episodes of The Jetsons, some were great, some were terrible, and the rest were so-so. The show isn't big on character development and seems to rely more on sight gags and jokes, but such is Hanna-Barbera's style. This series is great and we need the whole thing on DVD. Now. So check out this futuristic space-age family and learn just what we're in store for...if we were cartoon characters. Remember, to fully enjoy all this show has to offer, you gotta suspend your disbelief. Preferably until the show is over.
