Mothers Day. The one day out of the year where he thank our mothers for giving us life. Everybody has one, whether you've met them or not. Even machines have some form of mother. Take Rosie the Robot for example, who is about to discover the true meaning of Mothers Day. "Mothers' Day For Rosie", written by Harvey Bullock, the surly detective from Batman? So as the morning starts, Astro nearly falls to his death getting the news record (in lieu of paper). Rosie, meanwhile, performs her menial tasks of serving breakfast to her grateful family, then has to wake Elroy who stayed up all night writing a mothers' day poem. In a way, Rosie is like a mother to them all, don't you think? Well, as she watches Elroy in the shower, she reads through his poem and finds that she has tears, which she sheds, and shorts out. After resetting her circuit breaker and bringing Rosie back online, George deduces the problem as emotional. So he decides to go down to the robot factory and get a picture of the previous model (Rosie's ma). So while Jane and Rosie go to a travel office and try several hilarious locations for the fun of it, George and Elroy go to Robot City, where you just know that seedy salesman is going to try once again to stick them with a newer model. That poor salesman must be a very lonely man.
Unfortunately Robot City hasn't any models of the XB-400, which preceded Rosie, but the salesman points George to where the nearest model was located: the city dump. Spacely actually lets him take an hour off, when suddenly Jane calls and requests he tell George about a lovely black stole she saw at the mall. Getting an idea, Spacely asks George to buy the stole for himself to give Mrs. Spacely. So he buys it, as Jane looks on, thinking he's buying it for her. So after dropping off the stole at Spacely's, George heads for the dump to take a picture of "Rosie's ma". He's just in time to watch the poor, battered, obsolete XB-4000 get crushed to a cube by the senile proprietor. All is not lost, however, he did retain the blue prints. So it just might make Rosie's day. Jane, however, she was unhappy to hear the stole she saw George buy wasn't for her...even after she made George promise not to get her anything, she still wanted him to get her something....women! So, George hurries over to Spacely's to get the stole. But Mr. Spacely wouldn't budge, so it looks as though George is in the doghouse, right? Nope. Jane learns of George's gesture for Rosie and forgives him. Right at that moment, the Spacelys stop by, Cosmo having a "change of heart" and "wants" Jane to have the stole, which she happily accepts.
You know, I find it odd that Mr. Spacely didn't remember Rosie. If you recall, he got a kick out of her in the pilot episode and even adjusted George's salary to keep her. It's funny he forgot, but I guess they did it for the sake of jokes, or ol' Harv never saw that episode. Anyway, "Mother's Day for Rosie" was all heart. Even Mr. Spacely was nicer to George in this one, which you don't see too often. I recommend this episode for everyone who has a mother, living, dead or estranged.
