John Hodgman brings together so many of my favorite voice actors and comedians with the hilarious tale of a 40-somethtng Encyclopedia Brown that never found his way as an adult.

The animation reminds me of the original Scooby-Doo. That's the whole point of it! The witty jokes and banter have me cracking up. I have teenage daughters, so I get the jokes better than most. Times have changed, and this show may offend people with a lack of intelligence and wit. If you give a review, it's always good to use proper spelling and punctuation. :P Otherwise, people with Journalism degrees will diss you online.
Venture Bros Cancelled..? Thankfully theres Dicktown!
tcorbintaylor15 September 2020
If you would like a show that you can watch for silly situations, and then re-watch for for even more well written and delivered jokes, then give Dicktown a go!
If you are even the slightest fan of 'The Venture Bros.' or other shows that walk the line of smart/silly (smilly, if you will) then stop reading and start watching Dicktown!
Standing on it's own feet with both clever/fast dialogue & jokes for every type of fan, Dicktown is the most welcome of reprieves during this year.
John and David bring a calm and honest energy to every episode that is both refreshing in its honesty and levity while also addressing issues such as the high school cliques of yore being totally flipped, or if a ghost can be served court papers or not.
Cant wait for season 2!!

Decent show, love a lot of the ideas and the art style, it has a vibe that reminds me of Venture bros but in the genre of those teen detective now grown up. Unfortunately its kind of just bores me, its adequate, i just kind of wish the show was a little more fun than it is. Perhaps had a bit more to it, whether that be in character, creativity, drama or something.
Funny as hell

Weird, inappropriate and non -PC. I Love It.

Definitely immature adult humor. Purely pointless, mindless, rude, crude humor. Everything you're looking for late at night with a loaded bong and good friend (or a better doggo). Short episodes, no burn out or loss of plot. Did I mention I love it?
cool show

@ some of the people reviewing dicktown- show us on the doll where the mean cartoon hurt you. jeez!
anyway, this is a fun watch. the best part is honestly the chemistry between the 2 leads, which is very natural and funny. the writing is the wry comedy you would except from a hodgman brand product (weird dads included). i hope the network gives us a 2nd season l, because i think it can only get better from here.

Don't bother

I love Jon Hodgman, his podcast, and most of his performances, I really wanted to like this but I didn't. All the jokes hinge on an exhausting and patronizing take on teenagers dealing with modern issues and the main characters experience juxtaposed against it. I think this conceit if pulled off well could have worked but I never once laughed watching 4 episodes and frequently felt actively annoyed at the show.

Maybe it's an age thing, I don't know. Hunchman and I are cut from the same cloth. We're both privileged only children with asthma and a penchant for asking too many questions? I really enjoyed the titles, thought the writing was very good, and the animation is surprisingly precise to Hodgman's RL beard. I'd give it one more star if there was an animal episode, or possibly a pet sidekick. A snake?
These two made a funny show about genuine friendship growing under stagnant conditions.
IMO Burny86527 should spend less time on Twitter?

If you are a CIS Straight White Male who uses terms like "SJW" and "Cancel Culture", you're going to hate this show. Basically because you're the punchline. The rest of us can enjoy a very well written and smart show wrapped up in the mysteries solved by the two leads. But the mysteries aren't really the point, much like Archer, they take a back seat to the characters and dialog. I don't think it's going to set the world on fire, mainly because it's not going to appeal to the mainstream very much. But these little shows really can get viewers when services like Hulu take a chance. And in this instance, they have a solid show that deserves more seasons. I laughed out loud more than once.
Weak, dull plots and storylines
panskpd25 September 2020
The animation is "ok" and that's about it. Weak, dull storyline that never really go anywhere or make very much sense. Not funny or clever at all. I really wanted to get into this show because it seemed like it would be something new and interesting for adults but I was very disappointed.
It's addictive
Jiszmo17 April 2022
I don't know why, but this show is just addictive. I kind of was annoyed by the liberal seeming lean to this show. However, it is still totally enjoyable and addictive to watch. I've rewatched most of the episodes multiple times. Every time I am slightly annoyed by the left leaning or millenial seeming plot points. However, every time I still enjoy watching, and keep watching.
The interplay between the main characters is one of the shows strong points. They have good dialogue and chemistry. I also like each of them individually. I particularly like the main detective guy.
I remember reading about The Venture Brothers, which John Hodgman has appeared in. For that show, the creators had said that it was a show about failure. I feel like that applies here too. The characters are believable. They are not some all together characters. They are struggling in this world. I think that makes them more relatable.
Along the same lines, that makes me root for their success, over the course of the show. I am watching them grow, similar to The Venture Brothers. They have failures and successes, gaining inch by inch, a sense of of their selves. Maybe that is why it is so addictive. Even though each episode is a self contained story (I'm very grateful for that.), their is a sense of character growth.
The animation style is really good. I really like the animation.
Also, it just absurd, in general. Overall, I strongly recommend it, while at the same time it does make me wish for the death of Millennials and Gen Z types, which the show seems to embrace. Most of their clients are these types. I hate most of their clients. Lol I do suspect that the main characters also sort of hate them. Even though they do imply a few times their left leaning nature, insulting white males, embracing gender fluid cross dressers, and insulting Nazis.
Even with all those things, which I disagree with, I still really like this show. That is saying alot. Because, I am not usually willing to overlook those types of things. So, the show must be really good in other ways. And it is.

New show for adults... no, unless your brain stopped to develop around 12.

This is a prime example of "left can't meme".
Let's jump on the "punch a nazi" bandwagon, throw some "white fragility" jokes by strong waman (?) or gender fluid or whatever, voila... we are funny now.
If you were expecting something on the level of an early Archer seasons... read a book, go for a walk, do something useful for your family... a no sorry, I forgot that a according to this show, family is lame...

Clever, Diverse, Well-Written, and Deeper than it Appears

Animated adult cartoons are my favorite genre these days. This one quickly grabbed my attention. It's got the wittiness of early seasons of Archer without the over the top entitled and spoiled Archer Ego. Don't get me wrong, Archer's great. But I like the level of introspection these characters have. If you don't get the funny, then it's just not for you. I think it's hilarious but engaging. I love Tucker and his endless supply of goods. I like the relationship between the two leads and it's refreshing to see the honesty and emotion they share. Cis white males can be evolved, well-rounded, in touch with their emotions, and not threatened by "others". This show is a testament to that.

Its super awkward sometimes, but its funny and authentic and wholesome. I had a great time watching it, and was confused and disappointed to see its bad overall reception. I think my least favorite part was being yelled at by Amy Sedaris' character, but thats not unique to this show.
Hilarious

Shows like family guy and solar opposites have made us immune to shock humor and it's hard to follow that. This show is different. It's not shock humor but it's hilarious. The mumble rapper episode was by far one of the funniest things I've ever seen. The fact that they work for teens makes it better as the teen characters like tucker are great. It's not for everyone but it's definitely worth the watch. They have had great guest stars in their episodes so I hope this show keeps making episodes. The episodes are 12 minutes long so there's a lot packed into that time. As lil blurb might say: pop a xany, haters get wetted by my 9.
if someone wrote a weird twitter fanfic cartoon show
burny-8652726 September 2020
All the bad takes you see on twitter mashed together into very unlikable and very unrelatbale characters.
several times it reminded me of that comic with the bear beating up the guys for perving on a woman cosplaying at a convention, only the real photo's of the convention show the girl flirting with the guys and posing for them with the comics author sitting sad and alone in the background. this cartoon feels like the same level of disconnected fanfiction from actual reality.
at least the animation is mediocre, so i gues its not all completely bad

It seems FXX wants to ride the success of Archer and veer into animated shows. Please, I can assure you this is no Archer. It is a show that tries to fit into the political woke climate of our society. It tries to please everyone but falls flat on its face. IA show that literally looks and feels flat, the animation looks bad in a non creative funny way. Look at animated shows like Home Movies that despite their crude style were hilarious because of their strong stories and funny cast. This show is not.
