An Intriguing beginning.
Sleepin_Dragon13 March 2022
Two worlds collide, and so begins the story of the magpie murders, a murder mystery, within another murder mystery.

Not many writers understand whodunnits like Anthony Horovitz, just look at some of his work. He's penned something very enjoyable here.

It's not heavy, this is along the same lines as Father Brown and The Mallorca files, it's Sunday teatime viewing.

I've scored it quite highly because of the originality, I'm intrigued by events, I particularly enjoyed the 50's set segments.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, 8/10.

The missing pages

Warning: Spoilers
So the episode deliver some nice mysteries and nice developpment for the next episodes. I enjoyed the sequences where we follow the detective in the book and that was quite pleasant and give some ideas about what the writers wrote about but something is missing at the end and we know also that the writer is not really loved by anyone and have some problems. We follow and editor and we know more about her job, partner, life and that was quite an interesting character but i will love to see more her arc during the next episodes. But the editor will have a big problem: the book miss chapters and they will learn that Alan give them on purpose the missing pages but why? And we learn also that the writer is dead by "accident" but really doubt that was murder but need to see later. So the editor's new mission is to find the missing pages. And it end suddenly with that image of the detective of the book and the editor. Fiction and reality mixed?

I enjoyed that first episode and give it enough to make us interested; enough mysteries, enough revelations, enough surprises, enough informations to make us stay for the next episodes. Quite a promising episode for the next. Encouraging!!!

Classic Whodunnit in a Classic Whodunnit

Engaging start, intrigued to follow both plotlines. This is well written (Anthony Horowitz rarely fails) with good pacing and the delightful Lesley Manville leads-the-line with aplomb. Eagerly anticipating episode 2 which will, no-doubt, build upon this excellent platform.

Missing chapter and a missing ingredient
xmasdaybaby196610 February 2022
A good start to this, full of imagination and a whodunnit within a whodunnit to keep you intrigued. A little bit different but a lot the same.

Some familiar faces here but no real big star so the story remains the centrepiece.

It is whimsical without much drama but not a great deal of humour either.

Hopefully, it will remain strong enough to keep the audience inside.

So far, so good......but......

Having just tonight finished the book, I was very very happy to be able to find the mini series available. With the book very fresh in my mind, I settled down to watch episode one with high hopes. Which were pretty much fulfilled.

However, someone should've reminded the writer (whom I think is a wonderful writer and I'm a big fan of his books and TV series) or have reminded the producer, or have reminded someone, anyone, associated with this miniseries, that the character of Joy is white with blond hair! I certainly hope the remainder of the series is not filled with any more politically-correct mumbo-jumbo that seems to be jammed down our throat at every opportunity lately.

Episode 1

I have always found Anthony Horowitz to be rather hot and cold when it comes to television writing.

For every Foyle's War there is Crime Traveller.

There are two stories here. A mystery upon a mystery.

The main one being book editor Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) obtains the latest manuscript of best selling crime author Alan Conway. Only to discover that the last chapter missing.

Conway proves to be unhelpful as he is discovered dead.

He was an unlikeable man, difficult to get on with. His novels featuring detective Atticus Pünd were best sellers. This was due to be his last book.

As Susan tries to track down the lost pages. There is a mystery facing Atticus Pünd as well.

I have not doubt the two worlds will collide later on. The first episode was easy going and undemanding.

I did wonder if a certain member of the cast, you know the one who always plays villains is actually the murderer! That would hardly be a scoop.
