jimmy_flau15 April 2009
I really like this anime, it show a beautiful history of a relationship mother and daughter, abandoned from the father, and chasing him, to the deepest part of the amazing and one of a kind scenario's of the world BRAZIL, BRAZIL, BRAZIL!!!!!!^^ its about time the anime studios, and producers focus on new histories and back-rounds besides japan and anything related to that, because not all the fans of anime wants so see the same old story's and back-rounds year after year... its time to change for a bit, we need more "Michiko to Hatchin" for the new generation of fans of anime. take the example of American anime "the boondocks".

If you like Cowboy Bebop and well crafted characters this is the anime for you

Warning: Spoilers
There's something just a little different about Michiko and Hatchin. Weather it's the music and background (both clearly styled after Latin America most notability Brazil instead of the usual Japan setting). The strong female leads (each with a different rich and vibrant personality).Or the episodic way the the show takes itself (yes very cowboy bebop like), there's no denying this show is different and that's a good thing in the anime community when there's just so much of the same going around these days. The plot is simple. Convict Michiko Malandro escapes from prison intent on finding her long lost love Hiroshi Morenos, her only clue to finding him comes in the form of a little girl named Hana who may or may not be Hiroshi's daughter. She kidnaps Hana from her foster home and the two set out on a exciting journey to find the man these to women have a strong connection too. What will make or break this show for you is our two female leads. Both have uniquely different personalities, Michiko is hard headed and cusses enough that even a sailor would blush while Hana is straight forward, sensible and even a little wise beyond her years. There's also a female cop with past ties to Michiko and two psychotic gangsters that will show up every so often. If I haven't stressed this enough already Michiko and Hatchin is something fun and different if you have the time to check it out I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Michiko & Hatchin
Tweekums28 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This anime series is set in 'Diamandra' a fictional South American country that is mostly inspired by Brazil and follows our two eponymous protagonists as they travel through the country. Michiko is an escaped convicted who has 'freed' ten year old Hatchin from her abusive adoptive family. Michiko is convinced that Hatchin is the daughter of Hiroshi Morenos a former lover who was believed to have died many years ago… before Hatchin was conceived. Seeing Hatchin as proof that Hiroshi must be alive they set off to find him. As they travel together they don't always get along and they have to deal with numerous dangers including the police and various gangsters.

This series is an enjoyable adventure; the South American setting makes a refreshing change as does the multi-ethnic cast of characters. The characters are spirited and fun to watch as they frequently argue, and sometimes separate for an episode or two. Their quest to find Hiroshi is interesting, not only because it provides the reason for them to travel but also there is the question of whether Hatchin's father is actually the man they are looking for. The character designs are good and the backgrounds give a good South American feel to the story. Overall I'd recommend this to anime fans who want something a little different with a good amount of action as well as well-developed characters.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Tarantino-style Animation
aylin_chateaunoir23 May 2009
I'm not into romance animes/movies/books. I discovered "Michiko to Hatchin" by mistake, while searching for something completely different.

First, the animation is great. For me it was as close to a movie as something can be - not talking emulation or 3D, but in terms of gestures and dialog.

The storyline - you know where it is going, you pretty much have an idea of how it will end. But this is the beauty of this particular animation: it keeps you wanting to watch it until the end. You begin to care about the characters.

Soundtrack - background music is there when it should be and it adds to the story.

I couldn't stop watching it.

I definitely recommend it.

great anime!!!! PERIOD

Im gonna keep this short and sweet! Hana/Hatchin is one of the best characters to grace the anime format. She is a character that most of us adults could learn from. I highly recommend this anime...mostly for those that r sick of the standard everybody dying or all the massive amounts of blood. This show n that simple young character Hatchin...made my heart grow a lil bigger...n it makes me think that maybe there is other actual people out there in this world today that still thinks and acts the way she does...as silly as it sounds i have learned a lot about myself just by watching a young great hearted anime character. The show is great...trust me...any other negative reviews just don't understand or care to see the greatness or the message here.

My Review for Michiko & Hatchin
arturodv199621 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Michiko & Hatchin is different compared to other animes out there, but from beginning to end it was a blast. Having said that, I don't know if this would be something I'd re-watch. The story was interesting. It takes place in Brazil, where we meet Michiko (a troublemaker with a criminal background) and Hatchin (daughter of Michiko), who both set out to look for Hatchin's father. One thing I like about this anime is that you get to see a different culture, country, etc. Also, the side stuff was fun to watch but after a while I felt that I wanted to see more of the main plot instead of the standalone episodes. Monica Rial did a great job voice acting her character (Michiko), as did many of the other character voices. Some of the characters I found kind of hard to understand - i.e., what their motives were, if they were good or bad, or why they did this or that. But still, it was fun watching them. Michiko & Hatchin is not bad at all - true, some may not like it as much as others but I think if you want to watch something different, then watch this; the characters are interesting and the plot is good (despite the side stories) - basically a solid anime overall.

So Much Fun
graceayoub27 July 2021
This show is tons of fun and the mother-daughter dynamics are as laughable and loveable as you'd expect. It was also wonderful watching an anime that was so diverse and that showed Brazilian culture.

The ost, is wonderful and and the main characters are all interesting, funny and so entertaining. The dub is also very well done.

Even though I enjoyed the show it does have its share of problems, the ending could have been better and you're still left with some unanswered questions. But overall I recommend this anime.

I liked it, but not as much as I expected to
cherold2 September 2017
I was pretty excited by the first episode of Michiko and Hatchin. It began with a bang, with the tough, sexy Michiko wreaking havoc and sparring with a police detective with whom she was once friends.

But while I continued to enjoy the series, I never felt compelled to keep watching. It took me about a year to finish watching it, as I would forget all about it and then check out an episode.

I've been trying to figure out why that is. Michiko and Hana are both engaging characters, the episodes are interesting and full of intriguing characters. Why didn't I love it?

As I think about it, here's why it didn't keep me interested:

1) No mystery. A lot of anime series have some central mystery, like Samurai Champloo's samurai who smells like sunflowers. But M&H is very straightforward. Michiko wants to find a guy who left her. I never found myself wondering about him, or wondering if she'd find him, or wondering how it would turn out.

2) Michiko is a thug. Michiko is fearless and beautiful, and I liked her, but she's basically violent, self-centered, and stupid. She gets herself out of trouble, but it's always trouble she got herself into by doing something impetuous. I know that she's a balance to the more circumspect Hana, but it meant I was increasingly unsympathetic to her plight.

What kept me watching was the quality of individual episodes. Many were excellent, and there were some fascinating characters, such as a tomato-growing bisexual and Hana's little suitor. But these were all one-offs; the characters that we see more often are often less interesting, and even the interesting ones like the detective appear too sporadically to create any connection.

In short, M&H is entertaining but lacks forward momentum. I enjoyed it, and it's very well animated, but it did not resonate for me in the way of series like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo or Death Note or Stein's Gate.

Michiko has to be single-handedly be the strongest, most well-written, deeply-layered, female lead character ever in anime (that's set in a normal world where there is no supernatural or fictional occurrences,,just an anime set in a normal world where normal stuff happens). She means strictly business and will not back down from a palm reading session...if the situation ever arises.

Hatchin is this cool, rebellious kid with no sense of direction in life. She lives day by day and once she meets Michiko, her new life involves tracking down her father, which she's never met, with this mysterious woman, who she claims is the love of his life...Hatchin has no idea what life on the road w/ Michiko will bring her.

It's a beautiful story about revenge, run-downs, love, the act of moving-on, friendship, action, loneliness, and of course the relationship between a confident, gorgeous, short-tempered, spiritual-inclined lady and a smart-mouthed, unapologetic, bratty kid.

It's a must-watch.

Michicko & Hatchin
babbygirl8120 October 2021
I'm new to anime. I went from Dragon ball to Michiko & Hatchin. This story is both action-packed and heartfelt. It's set in a fictional Latino-Japanese city. The plot was interesting and well-paced, but it was the added bonuses of excellent animation and the fact that they based Michiko off of Aaliyah had me completely interested. Michiko may go from being a real badass to being weak and irresponsible in the blink of an eye. Backstories and positive traits are also presented to the adversaries, which is always appreciated. Even though Hatchin is the simplest character to root for, she isn't written to be a saint. This is an anime that I would suggest to both anime fans and casual viewers. The medium's location and premise are unique. The animation is bright and high-quality. It's unlike anime I've ever seen before, and it left me wanting more.

Little-known anime is unremarkable
Aleta_Nook30 August 2018
The plot is inconsistent, like there was a subplot where Hatchin was chasing after a thief who took her shoes in episode 3 but by midway episode 4, that subplot is completely thrown out the window. Though, the main plot is a buddy road trip show about two young girls who clash a lot, the writer did put a fresh twist on it but it ended up being executed pathetically.

Michiko and Hatchin's relationship is cliched, starting off not really liking each other but then growing to genuinely care for each other. None of the characters are particularly likeable, Michiko, while a refreshingly cool, badass black lady is really hot-headed, immature, and irresponsible and Hatchin is aloof, dense, and bratty. They tend to fight a lot like young sisters, though that's toned down by the middle of the series. The characters are overall, mediocre.

The only redeeming values are some of the comedy in it (though there are some corny ones). The music has a more latin/brazilian vibe to it, some of it is jazzy but it's nevertheless catchy. The voice actors did a fairly good job bringing fresh life to their characters (I watched the english dub) though the only downside is Hatchin sounds a little too whiny but it's not too big of a problem since she has a whiny, emotional personality. But she does sound like a 10-year-old instead of an adult trying to sound like one. And the charmingly beautiful art and animation.

Good quality production values, fairly decent animation, fresh voice acting, and groovy music is wasted on a poor script. Too bad Watananbe is only part of the music department in this anime. If he had a more major staff role, this anime probably would've been a lot charming. I can see why this anime was never that popular: It's too forgettable to be recommended. If you want something better by Watananbe, go check out Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, they are much more memorable with a more creative story, clever jokes, and likeable, realistic characters.

Poor writing, poor animation, uninteresting premise with a lot of head scratching moments. Michiko and Hatchin takes subpar elements and manages to build something less than the sum of its parts. Save yourself the time and skip this one.
