It’s difficult, if not nearly impossible, to walk into Adán Aliaga’s full length directorial debut without some consideration of the religious overtones that will undoubtedly appear in a film titled Estigmas (direct translation: stigmata) but Aliagan’s film isn’t concerned with the global apocalypse or the salvation of humanity but rather the exploration of one man’s life.
Bruno is a burly man with a soft demeanour. He’s kind, quiet and in trouble. An alcoholic, on the verge of being evicted and working for a man who takes advantage of his good will, he’s quickly being pushed into edges of life. He awakes one morning to find himself bleeding from wounds that have mysteriously appeared on his hands – stigmata. To Bruno, they are a curse, to his employer they are...

The only big film festival in my own backyard is back and it runs from November 12th through the 22nd. While it caters more to heavy run fest material and arthouse film, they do have some of the more interesting films playing this year:
Ryan Ward's excellent Son of the Sunshine which is one of my favorite films of the year. (review)
The weird, lengthy comedy The Revenant (review)
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
and much more. Program after the break!
In Competition
Children of Invention
Two first-generation Chinese kids in suburban Boston find themselves on their own after their desperate mother is unwittingly involved in a pyramid scheme and arrested. Older brother Raymond takes a page from her marketing seminars to start creating a life for himself and his sister - casting a strange, pint-sized reflection on the American Dream.

I have not heard of Ryan Ward before, and I felt sorry for myself. I guess, understanding what this movie - Son of the Sunshine - is all about, which is directed by Ryan himself, will help me understand him as an actor and as a filmmaker.

- - - About the Movie: Life is hard for Sonny (director and co-writer Ryan Ward). He's 24 and still living with his poor, negligent, heroin-shooting mom. He's unemployed. He's alienated and lonely. And he's got a wicked case of Tourette syndrome. Twitching, scowling and spewing random curses, he's a social outcast and victim of a vicious personal cycle: his illness isolates him, his isolation makes him angrier, his anger mixes with his condition and isolates him even further...Faint hopes for a livable future include a risky operation, a prospective lover, and a distant chance of getting to the bottom...

It's films like this which make me seriously question people's commitment to the art form I so love and make me wish I had enough cash flow to start my own dvd distribution label. (Anyone wanna back me?) Sots premiered at Slamdance earlier this year, and while some of it's brethren went on to some form of release, this gem still does not have a sales agent or distribution anywhere and has been lightly playing the fest circuit. What starts out as a drama about a young man with tourette's syndrome bleeds into the divine, and is overall, a solid, thoroughly enjoyable indie which deserves far more attention.
The fantasy portion of the film is better left unexplored, so I'll give a brief background before concentrating on an overview of this brilliant and profound cinematic movement.
